Final Stats
Morgantown, W.V. - Four Hoyas had at least ten digs, led by freshman Tory Rezin's (Morris, Ill./Morris) 14, as the Georgetown University volleyball team (9-7, 2-1 BIG EAST) won the final three sets to defeat West Virginia, 24-26, 25-21, 25-17, 25-23 in Morgantown, W.V. on Friday night.
Senior Caitlin Boland (Naperville, Ill./Benet Catholic) had 28 assists to help junior Jessica Hardy (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) get 13 kills. Freshman Sara Manley (Dove Canyon, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) contributed 11 kills in the victory. Along with Rezin, Boland, Hardy and freshman Ashley Malone (San Jose, Calif./St. Francis) each had 10 digs in the victory.
In the first set the Hoyas and Mountaineers traded the lead throughout. GU held the largest lead of the set when senior Kit Niesen's (Gainesville, Fla./Eastside) kill put the Blue and Gray in front 18-15, but WVU would eventually take a 22-21 lead behind an Abby Norman service ace and hold on to win 26-24.
The Mountaineers seemed to carry the momentum into the second set, twice leading by as many as five. Several Georgetown attack errors and a Bonnie West service ace gave West Virginia a 12-7 lead. GU would close the gap to one before WVU would make another run, extending the lead to 20-15. That is when the Hoyas went on a run, as freshman Ashley Malone (San Jose, Calif./St. Francis) served the Hoyas to five straight points including three service aces. WVU could not hold of the Hoyas as a Niesen block, a Hardy ace and a kill from Manley iced the set 25-21 to tie the score at a set apiece.
GU took control of the third set early, as two of Hardy's four kills in the set came in the Hoyas first six points. A 6-0 run helped the Hoyas take a 16-8 lead and the Mountaineers could not come any closer than five points, as the Hoyas won the third set 25-17 to take a 2-1 advantage. Boland had nine assists in the third set to run the offense.
West Virginia got back on track in the fourth set taking a commanding six-point, 13-7 lead to start. Georgetown would not be held down, going on a game-changing 8-0 run late in the set, regaining a 23-22 edge. Abbi Raines retied the score for WVU, but a Mountaineers attack error and Hardy's kill gave the Hoyas a 25-23 set victory and the match.
The Hoyas continue their two-match BIG EAST road trip, as they travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Panthers at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 5.
