Oct. 5, 2008

Final Stats

Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Georgetown volleyball team (10-7, 3-1 BIG EAST) fell behind by two sets, but would rally back to win the last three defeating Pittsburgh (10-8, 3-1 BIG EAST), 14-25, 19-25, 25-20, 25-19, 15-12 on Sunday afternoon. Junior Jessica Hardy Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs and sophomore Vanessa Dorismond (Cary, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) led the Hoyas with 13 kills and a .417 hitting percentage.

Freshman Ashley Malone (San Jose, Calif./St. Francis) ran the Hoyas offense with 34 assists and two service aces, while freshman Sara Manley (Dove Canyon, Calif./Santa Margarita) had five service aces, nine kills and 11 digs in the victory.

In the first set, Georgetown played the Panthers to a 6-6 tie before Pittsburgh ran away using a 7-1 run and a 5-0 run to put Georgetown away 25-14. The second set was much the same. GU played Pittsburgh close early, but the Panthers would make a run, this time going on a 7-0 spurt to leave the Hoyas behind, eventually winning 25-19 to take a two set advantage.

The Blue and Gray came out strong in the third set, never letting Pittsburgh get on a similar run that doomed them in the first two sets. The Panthers held a 12-11 lead before a kill and a block from Dorismond put the Hoyas in front for good, as they went on to win 25-20.

In the fourth set, GU used two 5-0 runs to create some separation from the Panthers. Dorismond played strong in the fourth with four of her 13 kills, while Malone had nine assists and two kills to help the Hoyas win 25-19, tying the match at two sets apiece.

The service game of Manley proved to be key in the decisive fifth set, as Manley served the Hoyas to five-straight points, including three aces to give them an early 7-2 edge. Pittsburgh was not able to recover, as Malone would serve the Hoyas to four straight points helping set up a 15-12 fifth set victory to clinch the match.
