Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (3-0) held on to defeat the Central Michigan University Chippewas (2-1) Saturday afternoon at McDonough Arena. The Hoyas led by as many as 19 late in the second half, but allowed CMU to get back in the game with minutes to go. However, Georgetown was able to convert their free-throw attempts in the closing minutes to hold on for the 82-77 win and stay perfect on the season. This marks the first time under Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy that GU has opened the season 3-0.
The Chippewas kept it close for the first five minutes, but the Hoyas staged a 16-0 run thanks to six points from freshman Latia Magee (Jenks, Okla./Jenks) to take a 20-10 lead midway through the first half. From that point on, CMU could only get within six points of Georgetown as the teams went into the break with the Hoyas leading 38-30.
Magee led GU in the first stanza with 10 points and a team-best four rebounds. Junior Shanice Fuller (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) added nine points as well as an assist and steal. Georgetown shot 50 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Chippewas 23-13.
GU continued to control the pace to open the second half. A 9-0 run at the eight-minute mark put the Hoyas up by 19 points as the squad was poised to cruise to a victory. However, the Chippewas had some fight left and staged a comeback getting within four points with three minutes to go. The Hoya defense buckled down and slowed the CMU run while also hitting key free throws including six from Fuller down the stretch. Despite the tense moments, GU managed to hold on for the 82-77 victory.
Magee led the squad with 23 points and seven rebounds while Fuller added 19 points and five assists. Freshman Adria Crawford (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) had 13 points and 11 rebounds for her first career double-double and classmate Rubylee Wright (Latta, S.C./Latta) posted a team-high seven assists. GU once again put up a strong showing in the paint, outrebounding CMU 54-35.
Georgetown will just have two days to recover before hosting Hampton on Tuesday at McDonough Arena at 8 p.m. Live stats and a webcast will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
