Washington, D.C. - Georgetown Crew opened the 2008 spring season with an overall team victory at the Ninth Annual Jesuit Invitational Regatta this past Saturday. The Men's Varsity 8 was victorious, while the Women's Varsity 8 finished second to host Saint Joseph's (Pa.). The Blue and Gray also won the Cannonball Trophy, which was awarded to the program with the highest team score.
Georgetown swept the men's events as the day was highlighted by the Varsity Men's 8 of stroke Frank Taylor, Paul Keith, Spencer Almy, Chuck Hartwig, Andrew Ciriello, Chris Griswold, Max O'Neill, bow CJ Mathieu and coxswain Jack Carlson winning the Casey Ferrone Memorial Trophy. The trophy was awarded to the GU crew after they finished with a time of 5:56.24.
The Second Varsity 8 (stroke Max Mickiewicz, Sam Bourneuf, Andrew Federer, Bob Morgan, Luke O'Donnell, Phil Goodman, Joe McElwee, bow Joe Ledvina and coxswain Rod Solaimani), Men's Freshmen 8 (coxswain Victoria Stulgis, K.C. Clark, Evan McGillen, Brendan Baumgardner, Patrick Opdyke, Will Keleher, Ryan Harbison, Matt Lavin and Andrew Ehrlich), Men's Freshmen 4 (Stulgis, McGillen, Clark, Ehrlich and Lavin) and Men's Lightweight 8 were all victorious.
The women finished second on the day behind host Saint Joseph's (Pa.). The Women's Varsity 8 finished 3.95 seconds behind the Hawks with a time of 6:52.13. The "A" crew consisted of Bevin Reilly, Victoria Koke, Christen Scanlon, Danielle Post, Melissa Horne, Meg Ginivan, Kaitlin Roe, Erin Carter and Anika DeVolder.
The Women's Varsity 4 won their event with a time of 8:08.12 as the crew of Reilly, Koke, Roe, Ginivan and Elizabeth Reahard finished four seconds ahead of a boat from Loyola (Md.)
The Women's Novice 8 (coxswain Stephanie Crigler, Claire Mongeau, Lauren Viehbacher, Sydnei Tolefree, Kate Voss, Brett Powers, J.J. Fritz, Katie Radaeva and Amy Tenet) and Women's Freshman 4 (coxswain Kateryna Christian, Hannah Kittel, Althea Smith, Ali McLaughlin and Garazi Zulaika) were second in their individual races.
