Georgetown Week Two Spring Report

April 11, 2008

On Saturday, April 5, the Georgetown University men's soccer team ventured east to Annapolis, Maryland to take on Navy and Penn State in two sixty-minute matches. A steady wind was made stronger with the field's location right next to the water. The Hoyas posted a 2-0 win over Navy before GU notched a 1-0 win over Penn State in the second match of the day.

Georgetown opened a bit slowly against Navy playing the first five or ten minutes in the defensive half. The Blue and Gray tallied two first half goals with Jose Colchao finishing off a tremendous passing sequence in the Navy third to open the scoring. Conor Neusel then sent a 20-yard screamer off the underside of the crossbar just minutes later. The game saw all twenty field players see action. Coach Wiese called it a "much improved performance" from the previous week against American and UDC.

After a short rest, Georgetown dueled with Penn State, in a rematch of a pre-season exhibition prior to the 2007 season - a 1-0 PSU win. The Hoyas got the better of this day with a 1-0 victory. Newly-appointed co-captin Mark Zeman hit a great freekick into the box that Chandler Diggs touched over to Sean Bellomy for an easy finish for the winner. Colchao harried the Penn State defense all game and almost came away with a second goal on several occasions.

In the team's first four spring matches (3-1) GU has scored nine and conceded one on a penalty. Goalkeepers Matty Brutto and Mark Wilber have both looked very sharp and have yet to lose a goal in the run of play.

On Saturday, April 12, Georgetown takes on host George Mason and St. Francis (Pa.).

Also, the Alumni Game is right around the corner on April 19! The current team will take on Old Dominion at 1 p.m. before playing the Georgetown Alumni at 3:30 p.m. on North Kehoe Field. A post-game cookout will follow the Alumni Game. Please RSVP to Coach Wiese bcw26@georgetown.edu if fans plan on attending.
