Georgetown Men's Soccer Team Announces 2008 Schedule

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University head men's soccer coach Brian Wiese has announced the Hoyas' 2008 schedule. The Blue and Gray will play 10 games on North Kehoe Field and GU will take on six schools that participated in last season's NCAA Tournament field of 48.

The 10 scheduled home games are the most since 2005.

After pre-season exhibitions at James Madison (Aug. 18) and vs. George Mason (Aug. 24) on North Kehoe Field, Georgetown will officially kick off the season when they travel across the country to the Cal St. Northridge Tournament vs. two opponents from the Big West Conference. In Northridge, located about 25 miles north of Los Angeles, the Hoyas will take on the host Cal St. Northridge Matadors on Friday, August 29 at 7:30 p.m. eastern time before a meeting with Cal St. Fullerton on Sunday, August 31 at 2 p.m. eastern.

Georgetown, who didn't play a home game until September 28 last season, will open a three-game homestand on Friday, September 5 at 3 p.m. vs. Southern Conference-member Davidson. Two days later on Sunday, September 7, the Hoyas welcome Hartford to the Hilltop in a non-league match.

In its final contest before BIG EAST action starts, Georgetown hosts Stony Brook on Wednesday, September 10 at 3 p.m.

The Blue and Gray opens league play on the road at Providence on Saturday, September 13 at 2 p.m. GU is 10-8-1 all time vs. the Friars.

Georgetown looks to avenge a loss to the USF Bulls in last season's BIG EAST Tournament when GU welcomes USF to North Kehoe Field on Friday, September 19 at 3 p.m. The Hoyas host defending Red Division champion DePaul on Sunday, September 21 at noon.

Georgetown then hits the road for three straight games. GU ventures to Rutgers on Friday, September 26 for an 8 p.m. game and follows that contest with a match at Villanova on Sunday, September 28.

One week later, Georgetown visits Notre Dame in a 1 p.m. contest. Coach Wiese returns to South Bend where he was an assistant coach under current ND head man Bobby Clark for five seasons.

During the second week of October, the Hoyas host Seton Hall at North Kehoe on Wednesday, October 8 at 3 p.m. prior to Connecticut visiting the Hilltop on Saturday, October 11 at noon.

Tuesday, October 14 sees Georgetown and American University renew acquaintances on AU's campus at 3 p.m. The Eagles are Georgetown's longest-running opponent (45 games). Georgetown has a 5-1-1 record over the Eagles in the last seven meetings between the schools.

The Hoyas will hit the road for a BIG EAST match at Pittsburgh on Saturday, October 18 at 1 p.m.

Georgetown closes the regular season with three home games. GU hosts West Virginia on Saturday, October 25 at noon.

The Hoyas host Adelphi, out of the Atlantic Soccer Conference on Wednesday, October 29 at 2 p.m. in the first-ever meeting between the schools.

GU will host Marquette on Saturday, November 1 at noon in the final regular season home game for the seven Hoya seniors.

Georgetown faces every school from the BIG EAST Blue Division (UConn, MU, ND, PC, Pitt, SHU, WVU) and four members of the BIG EAST Red Division (DPU, RU, USF, VU).

The 2008 BIG EAST Tournament is slated for Nov. 5 (play-in), Nov. 8 (Quarterfinals) and Nov. 14-16 (Semifinals and Finals) The Quarterfinals will take place on the campus of the higher seeds while the Semifinals and Finals will be played the at University of South Florida in Tampa.

The top six teams in each BIG EAST division, seeded by conference point total, qualify for the Tournament. The top two teams in each division earn a first-round bye into the Quarterfinals.

The 2008 NCAA Men's Soccer Championship is set to begin on November 21 with first round games. The College Cup will be held on December 14-16 at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas, home to the Major League Soccer's (MLS) FC Dallas.

Last season in 2007, seven BIG EAST members, Connecticut, DePaul, Louisville, Notre Dame, Providence, USF and West Virginia qualified for the NCAA Tournament, the most of any conference in the nation. It marked the third straight season that seven BIG EAST schools earned a spot in the field of 48.

Georgetown is coming off a 7-11-1 record in 2007 where the Blue and Gray posted a 5-5-1 mark in BIG EAST play. The Hoyas qualified for the BIG EAST Tournament as the No. 5 seed in the Blue Division before they fell to the fourth-seeded USF Bulls in Tampa, Florida.

The Hoyas lose just two letterwinners to graduation from the 2007 team. Georgetown returns all of its scoring production from last season in addition to All-BIG EAST third team defender Len Coleman and goalie Matthew Brutto, who compiled three shutouts in nine starts last season.
