Harrisonburg, Va. - The Georgetown University men's soccer team saw its first action of the 2008 season when the Hoyas took on James Madison University in a exhibition on Monday evening.
Georgetown and the Dukes played a 90 minute game and then played a 30 minute supplemental session.
The Hoyas fell in the first game 1-0 but rebounded to outscore the Dukes 2-0 in the supplemental workout.
"We had all of our regulars play at least 70 minutes today," said head coach Brian Wiese. "The boys were coming off three straight days of double training sessions so I think we were a bit flat. We had some tired legs but we expected it as that's the nature of the preseason.
"Overall I think the boys had a good sense of what we were trying to accomplish," added Wiese. "We were steady in the back but I felt we had to defend a bit too much."
Sophomore Matthew Brutto (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) and red-shirt freshman Mark Wilber (Tijeras, N.M./Albuquerque Acad.) each played a half in goal during the opening 90 minutes.
In the supplemental session, Georgetown recorded both of its tallies in the opening 15 minutes. Junior Justin Kondos (Odenton, Md./Arundel) headed in a ball after Ben Slingerland (Beverly, Mass./S. John's Prep) served a ball from the right wing.
Moments later, freshman David Madison (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect) crossed a ball towards the middle of the box that senior Hunter Joslin (Seattle, Wash./Eastlake) was able to send into the back of the net.
Georgetown takes to the field again in its final exhibition on Sunday, August 24 when the Hoyas host George Mason on North Kehoe Field. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
