Washington, D.C. - Georgetown University junior Len Coleman (Basking Ridge, N.J./Pingry School) was named the BIG EAST Conference's Defensive Player of the Week on Monday in an announcement by league officials.
Coleman led a defensive unit that posted two shutout wins en route to the team title at the Cal State-Northridge Tournament this past weekend.
In the opening game, Coleman and the Hoya backline limited host CSN to only two shots in the second half, and just four shots on goal total. In the Hoyas' 2-0 win over Cal State-Fullerton, GU allowed five shots on goal.
Coleman was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Defensive Player.
Senior forward Peter Grasso (Burr Ridge, Ill./Hinsdale Central) was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll, one of five players to earn the weekly honor. Grasso was named the Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the Tournament after scoring two goals in the Georgetown victories. He scored the lone goal in the season-opening win over CSN and then added the team's first goal in the win over Fullerton.
Georgetown won its first two games of the season for the first time since 2005 and posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time since doing so in the first two games three years ago.
The Hoyas play their home opener on Friday, September 5, hosting Davidson. Kick-off at North Kehoe Field is slated for 3 p.m. That game will be the first of three-straight home games for the Hoyas, who host Hartford on Sunday, September 7 (noon) and then play Stony Brook on Wednesday, Sept. 10 (3 p.m.).
