EVANSTON, Ill. - The Georgetown University volleyball team (6-5) was not able to overcome the No. 4 UCLA Bruins (9-1), falling 27-25, 25-16, 25-12 on Friday evening at the Wildcat Classic.
Junior Jessica Hardy (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) had eight kills and 10 digs, while senior Caitlin Boland (Naperville, Ill./Benet Catholic) had 30 assists in the loss.
GU started strong against the fourth-ranked Bruins, taking a 2-0 lead before trading points with throughout the early part of the match. UCLA took their first lead at 9-8 and extended it to 11-9. But every time UCLA looked to pull away, the Hoyas fought back. Georgetown regained the lead at 19-18 before the UCLA rallied back to a two point lead. Georgetown ran off three straight points to take a 23-22 lead. A Hardy kill put GU in front again at 25-24, but the Bruins scored the next three to survive a scare, 27-25. Hardy had six kills and a block in the first set, while Boland fed the hitters with 16 assists.
The Hoyas continued to play UCLA tough in the second set, trading points early on the way to an 11-11 tie. The Bruins regained a two point edge on two GU errors, but the Hoyas kept stayed within two until UCLA went on a 9-0 rally to end the set and take a two set advantage.
UCLA took control early in the third set, rushing out to a 13-3 lead. The Hoyas were not able to recover, falling 25-12 dropping the match 3-0.
The Hoyas are back in action at 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 20 when they take on University of Virginia for their final match at the Wildcat Classic.
