Hoyas to Host No. 7/11 Cardinals on Saturday at McDonough Arena

Jan. 16, 2009

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team will play host to the No. 7/11 University of Louisville Cardinals Saturday afternoon at McDonough Arena. The game marks Georgetown's second against a ranked squad so far this season and the first played on GU's campus. The Hoyas are 2-1 in the BIG EAST after defeating St. John's earlier in the week.

Georgetown is 12-4 overall and 2-1 in the BIG EAST with victories over St. John's and Syracuse. Senior Karee Houlette (Houston, Texas/Cypress Springs) is leading the Hoyas averaging 8.5 ppg and 14.0 ppg in BIG EAST play after scoring a career-best 22 points in the win over St. John's. Freshman Adria Crawford (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) is the squad's top rebounder with 6.7 rpg to her credit. Crawford is currently ranked second in the conference in offensive rebounds averaging 3.9 per game.

The Hoyas have relied on solid defense and depth to be successful this season. GU has forced teams to average 21.1 turnovers per game and had Notre Dame post a season-high 23 in South Bend, Ind., last Saturday. In 16 games, Georgetown has had eight different players lead the team in scoring showing how much talent is spread amongst the team. The Hoya bench has also been an asset with the reserves averaging 30.5 ppg while opposing benches are averaging just 16.8 ppg against GU.

The No. 7/11 Cardinals are 17-1 overall and 4-0 in the BIG EAST to tie for first in the conference standings. Leading the squad is All-American candidate Angel McCoughtry who is averaging 20.8 ppg and 8.9 rpg. Classmate Candace Bingham combines with McCoughtry at forward averaging 11.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game making the pair a tough duo to defend.

The Cardinals currently lead the three-year series 3-0. The squads' last meeting in McDonough Arena resulted in a tough loss for the Hoyas who fell 57-54 in the closing minute.

Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m., live stats and a webcast will be available at www.GUHoyas.com. Due to Inauguration activity, fans are reminded that only the Canal Road entrance to campus will be open. Those attending the game will be allowed to park in the Southwest Garage.
