Hoyas Suffer Tough 1-0 Loss at Marquette

Box Score

Milwaukee, Wis. - The No. RV/16 Georgetown University men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to the Marquette University Golden Eagles (3-7-3, 2-3-3 BE) Saturday evening at Valley Fields in Milwaukee, Wis. The Hoyas struggled to get into a rhythm and couldn't match Marquette's lone score as the squad dropped to 8-5-1 overall and 5-3 in BIG EAST play.

"We didn't play well tonight and Marquette came out and wanted the win and scratched and clawed to get it," said Head Coach Brian Wiese. "We just didn't have guys step up and make plays tonight, we came out flat and this is what happens if you do that in a BIG EAST game on the road."

The fast-paced Marquette offense forced the Hoyas back on their heels early on, as the back four came up with a number of big blocks in the box. As the game began to settle, it was Georgetown that started to see chances. The Blue & Gray had two shots on goal off of set pieces including a solid header from sophomore David Madison (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect) and a quick turn in the box by Jose Colchao (Fairfax, Va./Lake Braddock Secondary School).

The game changed, however, in the 29th minute when Marquette managed to find the back of the net off of a corner as Calum Mallace popped the ball out of keeper Matthew Brutto's (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) reach to make it 1-0.

At the break, Georgetown had outshot Marquette 10-9 and took one more corner but still trailed by a goal.

The second half would get no better for the Hoyas as they struggled offensively and allowed the Golden Eagles some dangerous chances. The game also became physical with four yellow cards being handed out amongst the squads throughout the half.

GU started out looking to attack but after the Golden Eagles stopped a number of opportunities, the Hoyas once again fell back on defense and were forced to make some big plays to avoid a two-goal deficit. Seth C'deBaca (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia Prep) and Colchao had the two best looks of the half but even an offensive push at the end would not be enough as the Blue & Gray fell 1-0.

"We can still reach our goal of finishing in the top two in our division but we have our work cut out for us," said Wiese. "We've got Notre Dame coming in on Wednesday, one of the top teams in the league, and then we have to go to West Virginia and play one of the hottest teams in the country. It's a critical time in the season for us to really be focused,"

Georgetown outshot Marquette 18-16 and took three more corner kicks in the contest. Brutto finished with seven saves in the game while MU keeper Matt Pyzdrowski tallied five.

The Hoyas will host the No. RV/22 Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Wednesday at North Kehoe Field at 3 p.m. Live stats and a webcast will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
