Final Stats
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Georgetown University volleyball team (11-13, 1-7 BIG EAST) battled Syracuse (18-5, 7-1 BIG EAST) through the first three sets, but struggled hitting -.121 in the fourth as the Orange defeated the Hoyas 3-1 (25-27, 25-21, 20-25, 16-25) on Sunday afternoon at Manley Field House.
Paris Coleman (Inglewood, Calif./Brentwood Academy) had a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs, while Lindsay Wise (Raleigh, N.C./Raleigh Charter) led the squad with 13 kills and Ashley Malone (San Jose, Calif./St. Francis) had 50 assists in the loss.
Wise and Sara Manley (Dove Canyon, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) were the beneficiaries of Malone's 17 first set assists, killing six and five balls respectively to help the Hoyas hit a match-high .297. Still Syracuse was able to build a four-point lead through the middle of the first set, capitalizing on seven attack errors and three service errors from GU. The Hoyas would rally to tie the score at 20, before Kortney Robinson (Pleasant Grove, Utah/Pleasant Grove) put Georgetown in front 23-22 with a kills. But in a set that featured seven lead changes Syracuse would hold on for a 27-25 victory.
Georgetown would take its first lead in the second set at 16-15 on a kill from Malone, who would add 15 assists through the set, while Vanessa Dorismond (Cary, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) and Wise would combine for eight kills. The Orange would retake the lead at 21-20 and allow just one more GU point to take the second set 25-21, for a 2-0 advantage.
In the third set, Coleman played one of the strongest sets by a Hoya this season, hitting 1.000 with seven kills and two service aces, helping GU get back into the match. Coleman had two consecutive kills to give Georgetown an 18-16 lead, another to keep them in front 22-20 and then back-to-back service aces to help GU close out Syracuse 25-20 in taking the third set.
The Orange would finish out the match in the fourth, taking advantage of 11 GU attack errors and three service errors. The Orange's Sarah Morton had four kills and six total blocks in the fourth set to lead SU to a 25-16 win, sealing the match, 3-1.
Georgetown returns to the court next Saturday, Oct. 24 when they travel to Tampa, Fla. to play USF at 2 p.m. After a trip to Villanova on Nov. 1 the Hoyas conclude its home schedule at McDonough Arena with matches against BIG EAST rivals Cincinnati and Louisville on Nov. 6 and Nov. 8.
