WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer squad dropped a tough 3-1 decision to the American University Eagles (9-3-2) Wednesday afternoon at North Kehoe Field. After leading early, the Hoyas allowed three unanswered goals. With the loss, Georgetown drops to 9-7-1 with one game remaining in the regular season.
"We didn't make it hard for them today," said Hoya Head Coach Brian Wiese. "We gave them two goals. It's not like we were playing particularly well and not like we played particularly poorly but we went up and it was good. Suddenly we were tied and then they were ahead. Goals were going in that shouldn't have."
Despite poor field conditions and missing a number of starters due to injury or cautions, it was Georgetown that struck first in the 19th minute. Junior defender Ibu Otegbeye (Winter Park, Fla./Winter Park) threw the ball in on the right side and freshman Andy Riemer (McLean, Va./Georgetown Prep) managed to get up for it in the box and direct it across to the feet of classmate Jimmy Nealis (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) who took one touch and fired towards the far post making it 1-0.
Unfortunately, that would be as dangerous as the Hoyas would look until late in the second half.
It was then American that went on the attack scoring a pair of goals off of defensive miscues just four minutes apart to take over the lead. Karsten Smith scored the first heading it in unchallenged off of a corner in the 28th minute, while Mike Worden tallied the second after Georgetown keeper Mark Wilber (Tijeras, N.M./Albuquerque Academy) came out high.
The Hoyas went into the break trailing by a goal and notching no saves in the opening stanza. The teams were tied in both shots (4) and corners (2) in the first half.
It didn't get much better for the Blue & Gray in the second as they still struggled to challenge AU keeper Matt Makowski. The Hoyas had a number of solid crosses but the Eagle defense managed to clear every attempt. In the 53rd minutes, AU added the dagger scoring off of a thru ball to make it 3-1.
Despite a number of solid shots including one off of the cross bar from Jose Colchao (Fairfax, Va./Lake Braddock Secondary School) and another off of the post by Scott Larrabee (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Loyola of Los Angeles) Georgetown just couldn't answer falling 3-1 at the final whistle.
The Blue & Gray outshot American 12-10 and took three more corner kicks but tallied just one save while the Eagles managed three.
Georgetown will close out the regular season on Saturday at home against Providence. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. There will be a short ceremony prior to kickoff honoring the three seniors. Live stats and a webcast will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
