WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer squad dropped an overtime heartbreaker to the Providence College Friars (8-6-3, 5-4-2 BIG EAST) Saturday afternoon at North Kehoe Field. The Hoyas tied it up in the second half and forced an overtime period but the Friars scored three minutes in as Georgetown played a man down to make the final 2-1. The Blue & Gray is now 9-8-1 and 6-5 in the BIG EAST as they open the BIG EAST Tournament on Wednesday.

"My heart is broken for the seniors, I think all three of them played a great game," said Head Coach Brian Wiese. "We had a great training session yesterday, we came out really well, we were pressuring, we were making things happen but we didn't get the win and in soccer that's what they look at."

Georgetown came out looking strong as the Hoyas had a number of near-goals in the opening minutes. Unfortunately it was Providence that scored first when Andrew Sousa hit from 30 yards out into the upper left corner in the 26th minute to make it 1-0.

After a quiet first half, Georgetown once again looked strong to open the second half and just five minutes in the Hoyas scored the equalizer off of a corner kick. Senior captain Mark Zeman (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) served a corner kick into the box and Alex Verdi (Ivyland, Pa./Germantown Academy) managed to redirect it to Jose Colchao (Fairfax, Va./Lake Braddock Secondary School) who slid it in to tie it up.

Georgetown looked dangerous as the momentum began to shift in its favor but a red card issued to Ibu Otegeye (Winter Park, Fla./Winter Park) in the 57th minute hampered the Hoya attack as they were forced to play a man down the remainder of the contest.

The Blue & Gray had a number of solid chances playing a man down in regulation including one by Andy Riemer (McLean, Va./Georgetown Prep) that hit the underside of the crossbar but couldn't connect forcing an overtime period. It was Providence that found the game winner in overtime as Timothy Ritter headed in a serve from Sousa to score in the 93rd minute making the final 2-1.

Georgetown outshot Providence 10-5 and took eight corner kicks while the Friars were awarded none. Mark Wilber (Tijeras, N.M./Albuquerque, N.M.) took the loss in goal with one save in the game.

Georgetown will host a BIG EAST Tournament First Round game on Wednesday afternoon at North Kehoe Field, kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. The opponent will be determined with the conclusion of today's BIG EAST games. Live stats and a webcast will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
