Hoyas Fall to Huskies, 3-0

Oct. 4, 2009

Final Stats

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University volleyball team (11-9, 1-3 BIG EAST) was not able to overcome a strong hitting performance from UConn, (10-9, 3-1 BIG EAST) who hit .309 on its way to a 3-0 (20-25, 22-25, 22-25) victory over the Hoyas at McDonough Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Vanessa Dorismond (Cary, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) led the Hoyas with 11 kills, while Lindsay Wise (Raleigh, N.C./Raleigh Charter) hit .417 with seven kills. Ashley Malone (San Jose, Calif./St. Francis) had 36 assists and Tory Rezin (Morris, Ill./Morris) had 18 digs to lead the Hoyas.

The Huskies opened strong taking a 5-1 lead out of the introductions, before the Hoyas woke up. Behind the serve of Malone, the Hoyas would rally for six consecutive points to take an 11-7 lead before a UConn timeout. During the run Kortney Robinson and Wise would combine on a block, before two consecutive Robinson kills. Manley, who led GU in the first set with five kills, would give the Hoyas an 11-7 lead. UConn would stage a rally of their own, battling back to tie the set at 14 and taking a 15-14 lead before GU called for time. The Huskies continued to roll after the timeout, scoring six of the next eight points, taking an insurmountable 21-16 lead on the way to a 25-20 first set victory.

UConn opened the second set as they did the first, taking a 6-2 lead to start. The Hoyas quickly tied the set at six, as Kiersten McKoy started a 4-0 run and Rezin served up two aces to finish it. The Huskies responded after a timeout scoring three straight, before a Robinson block and Dorismond kill brought the Hoyas to within one. The pattern would continue, as UConn would extend its lead to as many as four before GU would answer. The Hoyas tied the score twice, but was unable to move in front, as Chauntay Mickens sealed the set with a kill at 25-22.

Malone was able to spread the ball around early in the third set, as Georgetown took a 10-7 lead before UConn would call for time. The Huskies responded after the talk going on an 8-3 run to take a 15-13 advantage before a GU timeout. The Hoyas would never lead again, tying the score once at 20, as the Huskies went on to clinch the third set, 25-22 and the match in three games.

The Hoyas continue a five-match homestand next weekend when they host Pittsburgh on Friday, October 9 at 7 p.m. for their DIG PINK Breast Cancer Awareness match. Fans attending Friday's match will receive free giveaways at the door. GU will also host BIG EAST rival West Virginia on Sunday, October 11 at 2 p.m.
