VILLANOVA, Pa. - Ashley Malone (San Jose, Calif./St. Francis) had 43 assists and 12 digs and three Georgetown hitters had double-digit kills, as the Hoyas (12-14, 2-8 BIG EAST) snapped a six-game losing streak with a 3-1 (15-25,25-12,25-15,27-25) victory Villanova (16-9, 5-5 BIG EAST) on Sunday afternoon. Vanessa Dorismond (Cary, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) led GU with 12 kills, while Lindsay Wise (Raleigh, N.C./Raleigh Charter) and Sara Manley (Dove Canyon, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) each had 10, while Holly Jacobus led four Hoyas with double-digit digs with 13.
Villanova and Georgetown traded points early in the first set tying the score for the fourth time when they got to 10 all. That's when the Wildcats would take over scoring 11 of the next 13 points, including two consecutive Amy Gulyas service aces to take a 21-12 lead before Georgetown head coach Arlisa Williams called a timeout. The Hoyas were unable to respond in the first set, as Villanova held on to win 25-15.
The Hoyas would answer back in the second set, taking the lead at 3-2 and never looking back. GU would extend the lead throughout the second set, going on an 8-3 run to open a seven point lead at 14-7. Georgetown would hit .407 as a team, with Wise hitting 1.000 with four kills in the second set to help expand the lead to 13 by the end, finishing with a 25-15 victory, tying the match at one set apiece. Georgetown continued to roll in the third set, hitting a match-high .414 as a team, while holding the Wildcats to a .069 hitting efficiency. Still, Villanova jumped out to an early lead at 8-5, before the Hoyas responded scoring 10 consecutive points capped by consecutive kills from Lindsay Wise and Courtney Cohen. In all, Malone served the Hoyas to nine of those points with Cohen and Wise each having two kills during the stretch. The Wildcats would not be able to come any closer than six points, as GU would lead by as many as nine on the way to a 25-15 third set win, taking a 2-1 set advantage.
Villanova would lead throughout much of the fourth set, bringing the Hoya hitters back to earth, holding them to a .163 hitting percentage. After falling behind 22-20, Williams would call for a timeout, leading to a Hoyas rally. GU scored the next three, including an ace from Malone to put GU in front 23-22, their first lead since 2-1. VU would come back, as Elysse Studzinski's kill put the Wildcats in front 25-24. The Hoyas would break Villanova's set point and took advantage of three consecutive VU attack errors to close out the set 27-25, sealing a 3-1 match victory.
The Hoyas return to McDonough Arena on Friday, November 6 when they take on Cincinnati at 8 p.m. On Sunday, November 8 GU will host its final home game of the 2009 season when they take on Louisville at 2 p.m. Sunday will also be Senior Day, as the Hoyas will honor Courtney Cohen, Jessica Hardy and Kiersten McKoy prior to the match.
