Women's Basketball Signs Two to National Letters of Intent

Nov. 16, 2009

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown women's basketball squad announced two signings Monday afternoon for the Class of 2014. Samisha Powell and Andrea White both signed National Letters of Intent and will join the Hoyas in the fall of 2010. Georgetown kicked off the season this past weekend with a 79-55 victory over Missouri State on Saturday.

"We are excited to have both Samisha and Andrea joining the Hoyas," said Georgetown Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy. "They are both incredibly athletic and have competed at the highest level which will be important playing in the BIG EAST Conference."

Both players join the team from the Boo Williams Elite squad based out of Hampton, Va. This nationally-recognized AAU team won last April's Nike Spring Invitational with a new cast of characters. Current Hoyas Shanice Fuller (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) and Ta'Shauna "Sugar" Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) played with the squad before coming to Georgetown.

Powell comes to the Hilltop as another talented guard for the up-tempo Hoyas. She is a product of Princess Anne High School after transferring from Bayside High School before her junior season. Powell was a Virginia Group AAA First Team All-State honoree last season after leading Princess Anne to the state title and scoring 34 points in the championship game. Over her three years she has been recognized multiple times as All-Eastern Region, All-Beach District and All-Tidewater. Most recently, she has been nominated as a McDonald's All-American.

Powell averaged 14.7 ppg as a junior at Princess Anne and 13.1 ppg as a sophomore at Bayside. She is currently ranked the No. 88 overall recruit for her class by HoopGurlz.com.

"Samisha is an aggressive defender that's willing to take on the challenge of defending some of the toughest players in the BIG EAST," said Boo Williams, head coach of the Boo Williams Elite squad.

Joining Powell will be another Virginian in Andrea White, a forward out of Lancaster High School. White is an athletic player who flew under the radar before joining the Boo Williams Elite squad. She averaged 23.2 ppg, 7.0 rpg and 4.0 steals per game as a junior. Her athleticism will come in handy in the paint for the Hoyas, White is a talented track & field athlete holding Virginia state titles in long jump, high jump and triple jump.

"Andrea is an underrated post player that doesn't always show up on the stat sheet, but she rebounds the ball extremely well and is always around the basket," said Williams.

Georgetown is one of the younger teams in the nation with 10 underclassmen currently on the roster. The Hoyas brought in three freshmen this season and have seven sophomores who have seen significant minutes over the course of their careers.

The Blue & Gray will play at James Madison in its second game of the 2009-10 season on Wednesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Livestats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
