WASHINGTON - The 2009 CoSIDA / ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District Teams for men's and women's soccer were announced with two members of the Georgetown men's team receiving accolades. Three Academic All-District teams are chosen in each district with members of the first team eligible for All-American honors.
Receiving a spot on the first team for the Hoyas is junior goalkeeper Mark Wilber (Tijeras, N.M. / Albuquerque Academy). Wilber is currently majoring in biology and carries a 3.86 GPA. On the field Wilber has led the Hoyas, starting 10 games in goal and recording five shutout victories. He was previously named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week at the end of September after posting back-to-back shutouts, helping the Hoyas earn a spot in the national rankings. In addition to earning first team accolades Wilber will now be placed on the ballot for Academic All-America consideration.
Also earning all district honors is junior defenseman Alex Verdi (Ivyland, Pa. / Germantown Academy). Verdi, who carries a 3.59 GPA while majoring in financial operations and information management, was named to the second team. On the field Verdi has started every game and is a part of the Hoya defense which has earned eight shutouts on the year. Earlier this season, Verdi was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week.
Nominations and voting for the All-America programs are conducted by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Georgetown will host DePaul in a BIG EAST Tournament First Round game on Wednesday afternoon at North Kehoe Field, kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. Live stats and a webcast will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
