WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team dominated the Wofford College Terriers (1-4) Saturday afternoon in GU's home opener at McDonough Arena. After a slow first half, the Blue & Gray scored 52 points in the second half to win 90-57. The Hoyas were led by freshman Ta'Shauna "Sugar" Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) who scored 25 points in her first game at McDonough Arena. With the win Georgetown improves to 5-2 on the season.
"We started out slow in the first half, but I was happy with our defensive pressure in the second," said Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy. "One of our goals every game is to share the ball so it was good to have five players in double figures."
Despite the lopsided result, the Terriers kept it close in the first half cutting the lead to just one point, 22-21, at the six-minute mark. A three from Alexa Roche (Bellmore, N.Y./St. Michael's Academy) gave the Hoyas some breathing room as they continued to control the pace of the game.
Late in the first, Georgetown went on a 7-0 run and closed out the half leading 38-28.
Rodgers had 12 points to lead all scorers in the first and sophomore point guard Rubylee Wright (Latta, S.C./Latta) added seven. Adria Crawford (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) posted a team-best five rebounds as both squads managed to pull down 12 boards apiece. GU shot 47.1 percent in the half but allowed the Terriers 42.9 percent shooting from the field. The Hoyas forced 20 turnovers in the first.
Georgetown turned it around in the second, opening with an 18-3 run. The Hoya defense continued to press forcing 13 Terrier turnovers in the first six minutes of the half. As the second continued, GU rotated in a number of players and ran the break to go up by as much as 35 with just minutes remaining. At the final whistle Georgetown cruised to the 90-57 victory posting its largest margin of victory so far this season.
The Hoyas had five players in double digits marking the first time since the 2007-08 season. Rodgers led all scorers with 25 points as well as five assists and three steals. Tia Magee (Tulsa, Okla./Jenks) tallied 16 points and a team-high five rebounds and Jaleesa Butler (St. Louis, Mo./Alton) had 11 points. Monica McNutt (Suitland, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) and Wright rounded out those in double figures with 10 points each.
The Blue & Gray shot 50.9 percent from the field but allowed 51.4 percent by the Terriers. The Hoyas forced a season-high 42 turnovers in the game and had 24 steals including five from McNutt.
Georgetown will head back out on the road this week facing LaSalle on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.
