Rodgers Earns BIG EAST Rookie of the Week Award

Nov. 30, 2009

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University freshman shooting guard Ta'Shauna "Sugar" Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week on Monday after a pair of outstanding performances where the Hoyas went 2-0. The honor marks the first weekly award for the program since the 2005-06 season. Georgetown (5-2) will travel to LaSalle on Tuesday for a nonconference matchup.

Rodgers had an exceptional week averaging 27.0 ppg as the Hoyas defeated Central Michigan and Wofford. Against the Chippewas, the freshman had a career-best 29 points and tallied her first block of the season. Along with her scoring, Rodgers posted 3.5 apg, 2.5 steals per game and 1.5 rpg. She was 7-of-8 at the line and shot 55.9 percent from the field over two games. Rodgers went 6-of-8 from beyond the arc against Wofford and shot 50 percent from three for the week.

The Suffolk, Va., native has started out hot for the Blue & Gray leading the squad in scoring in six of the first seven games this season. She was named to the BTI Classic All-Tournament Team and is currently leading the entire BIG EAST in scoring averaging 20.6 ppg. Rodgers also leads the conference for three's in a game (3.4) and ranks in the top ten for free throw percentage.

Rodgers came to the Hilltop as one of the top recruits ever under Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy. She was an all-state guard at King's Fork High School and a McDonald's All-American.

Georgetown will continue its nonconference schedule with a game at LaSalle on Tuesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Tom Gola Arena. Live stats and a webcast will be available provided by LaSalle Athletic Communications at www.GUHoyas.com.
