Final Stats
WASHINGTON - Ashley Malone (San Jose, Calif./St. Francis) had 30 assists and four service aces, while guiding the Hoya hitters to a .286 hitting efficiency, as the Georgetown University volleyball team (13-14, 3-8 BIG EAST) shocked Cincinnati (19-9, 9-2 BIG EAST) 3-0 (25-23,25-19,25-21) on Friday night at McDonough Arena. For the Hoyas, it was a welcomed return home, having played the last three weekends on the road.
Vanessa Dorismond (Cary, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) had nine kills and seven total blocks and hit .429 while Sara Manley (Dove Canyon, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) led the squad with 10. Kortney Robinson (Pleasant Grove, Utah/Pleasant Grove) had 10 digs and six total blocks, while Tory Rezin (Morris, Ill./Morris) had ten digs to move into second place all time for digs in a season with 424. Rezin trails only Simone Kollmann, who had 472 digs in 1990.
Cincinnati opened the match with a kill, but Georgetown was able to answer as Dorismond had two kills to help the Hoyas keep pace. Dorismond's service ace gave the Hoyas their first lead at 6-5, before a Bearcat service error would put GU in front for good. Georgetown would never extend its lead past three points, but the Hoyas out hit Cincinnati .250 to .095 helping hold on to a 25-23 first set win.
Manley led the Hoyas in set two with four kills, hitting .500. The teams traded points early in the first set, but a Robinson kill, two Malone service aces and a Manley kill gave GU an 8-5 cushion. GU could not extend the lead past three, as the Bearcats would eventually tie the score at 17, before GU head coach Arlisa Williams called for time. After the time out the Hoyas responded scoring the next four points with kills from Manley and Courtney Cohen (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep). Missy Harpenau's kill broke up the Hoyas' run, but a service error and consecutive kills from Manley and Dorismond closed out the second set 25-19 for Georgetown.
Lindsay Upton served Cincinnati to a 3-0 lead, before the Hoyas answered with a 5-0 run behind the serve of Holly Jacobus (Galt, Calif/Stanford University HS) to surge ahead. The Hoyas would never trail again in the deciding set, leading by as many as six points. Dorismond, Manley and Lindsay Wise (Raleigh, N.C./Raleigh Charter) each had three kills, helping the Hoyas hit a match high .346 to close out the Bearcats 25-21.
Georgetown will play its final home match on Sunday at 2 p.m. against Louisville. Sunday will be Senior Day on the Hilltop as GU will recognize Courtney Cohen, Jessica Hardy and Kiersten McKoy prior to the match.
