WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball squad will look to continue a seven-game win streak with a noon matchup against the Richmond Spiders at the Robins Center on Saturday. The Hoyas are currently 8-2 on the season and opened the year with six-straight road games.
On Tuesday night, the Hoyas defeated Southwest Baptist 82-41. Senior Jaleesa Butler (St. Louis, Mo./Alton) led the charge with a game-high 17 points, while sophomore Adria Crawford (Alexandra, Va./Thomas Edison) added a season-best 16. Butler also led the Hoyas with a team-high eight rebounds. Freshman shooting guard Ta'Shauna "Sugar" Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) added 13 points and dished out a season-high six assists. The Hoya defense had another strong effort forcing 28 turnovers.
Georgetown is led by Rodgers who is averaging 18.6 ppg. She is joined by Butler (St. Louis, Mo./Alton) who is averaging 11.4 ppg and a team-best 7.3 rpg. Georgetown is averaging 74.7 ppg while holding opponents to just 55.2 ppg.
Richmond is 7-2 coming off of a 66-52 road victory at Virginia Commonwealth this past Sunday. Junior Brittani Shells posted her first career double-double with a game-high 18 points and a career-best 11 rebounds. Sophomore Abby Oliver had 15 points off the bench. Shells leads the Spiders averaging 16.2 ppg, while Katie Holzer leads the squad in rebounds averaging 6.6 rpg. Richmond is currently on a three-game win streak. The Spiders are averaging 61.1 ppg and 9.9 steals per game.
The series record between Georgetown and Richmond is tied at six wins each. The teams last met last season in the third round of the WNIT. The Hoyas defeated the Spiders 65-49 and both squads had three players in double-figures. Georgetown gained an advantage jumping out to a 30-14 first-half lead. The Hoya defense then held the Spiders to just 29.8 percent shooting from the field.
