WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball squad will look to continue a five-game win streak with a 1 p.m. matchup against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons Saturday afternoon at McDonough Arena. The Hoyas are currently 6-2 on the season and opened the year with six-straight road games. Saturday marks only their second home game in eight contests.
The Blue & Gray have been successful in recent weeks with a five-game win streak and a victory over a nationally ranked opponent already to their credit. Last week, GU defeated the Wofford College Terriers and the LaSalle University Explorers with an average margin of victory of 32.0 ppg. Georgetown has forced more than 20 turnovers every game so far this season and most recently forced 36 turnovers against LaSalle. In the Wofford game, the offense also had a solid showing with three starters posting double-digits.
Georgetown is led by freshman shooting guard Ta'Shauna "Sugar" Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) who is averaging 20.1 ppg and scored a career-high 29 points earlier in the season at Central Michigan. She is joined by senior Jaleesa Butler (St. Louis, Mo./Alton) and sophomore Tia Magee (Tulsa, Okla./Jenks) who are both averaging double-digit points per game.
Wake Forest is 6-1 on the season. The Demon Deacons started the year with six-straight wins, but could not continue the streak falling to Illinois by 15 points, 65-50, on Wednesday. The Demon Deacons are led by junior Brittany Waters who is averaging 21.0 ppg.
Georgetown is 1-1 all-time against the Demon Deacons, but has never faced them at McDonough Arena. The most recent meeting was on March 22, 2009 in the second round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament. Georgetown won that contest 72-61 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at McDonough Arena. Live stats and an audio webcast featuring Drew Wiseman will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
