WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Georgetown University Coed Sailing Team used a very successful run over the last two weekends to propel itself to the No. 1 ranking in the country. The Hoyas coed team competed in five events over the course of spring break.
At the John Jackson Team Race Regatta, hosted by Georgetown, the Hoyas used superior boathandling and boatspeed to best a field that included then-No. 1 Boston College and second-ranked St. Mary's College. The Hoyas swept all of the races on Sunday en route to a 13-1 record. In succession, the Hoyas defeated Yale, College of Charleston, St. Mary's, Boston College, Navy, South Florida and New York Maritime to claim the title.
At the St. Mary's College Team Race the Hoyas finished third overall with a 9-3 record and finished behind St. Mary's and Boston College who finished at 10-2. The Hoyas beat both St. Mary's and BC in head-to-head competition, but lost a close race to fifth-place finisher Brown, costing the Hoyas a chance to win the event.
In other action the Hoyas finished second at the ODU South Series Regatta and had regattas at New York Maritime and Washington College cancelled due to lack of wind. The Blue & Gray at John Jackson and St. Mary's consisted of skippers: sophomore Charlie Buckingham, sophomore Evan Aras, junior Marco Teixidor and senior Nik Holtan with crews junior Alexandra Taylor, senior Carly Chamberlain, junior Caila Johnson and senior Andi Bailey.
The Georgetown University women's team, which started the Spring season as the No. 1 team in the country, slipped to No. 2 in the latest rankings. The women finished seventh overall at the Navy Spring Women's Intersectional where racing was limited to one day due to light winds. At the College of Charleston Women's Intersectional, GU finished second overall losing to host and new-No. 1 College of Charleston. Sailing for the women's team in the A Division is senior Emily Babbitt and sophomore Ashley Phillips and in the B Division: freshman Sydney Bolger and sophomore Ginger Cutler or senior Brooke Crawford.
The Hoyas are back in action this weekend with the Coed Team sailing at the Trux Regatta at Navy and the women are competing at the St. Mary's Women's Intersectional.
