Georgetown Volleyball Announces 2009 Schedule

July 10, 2009

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Georgetown University Women's Volleyball Head Coach Arlisa Williams has announced her team's 30-match 2009 fall schedule beginning on Friday, August 28 when they take on George Washington University in Fairfax, Va. as part of the annual DC Challenge. The 2009 season marks Williams' fourth at the helm of the Hoyas volleyball program.

"We are very excited about our 2009 schedule. It will prove to be a very competitive schedule for us, but one that could hold many rewards," Williams said. "This season's schedule will definitely give us a true feel for where we stack up locally, regionally, and nationally."

For the fourth consecutive season, Georgetown opens the season at the DC Challenge. The Hoyas take on George Washington on Friday, August 28 before travelling across town to play George Mason and American on Saturday at American University. GU will also take part in the Yale Invite and the UNC Greensboro Tournament with its own Georgetown Classic in between. The Blue and Gray will host William & Mary, Hampton and Maryland at the Georgetown Classic on September 11 and 12 at McDonough Arena.

"As always, we are excited to compete against our local rivals as we take on George Washington, George Mason, and American in the 4th Annual DC Challenge," Williams said. "In addition, we will take on another local foe during the Georgetown Classic when we play host to the University of Maryland, coming from the strong Atlantic Coast Conference which took three teams to the NCAA tournament in 2008."

Georgetown will look to continue to push forward in the BIG EAST Conference, after finishing 7-7 in 2008. GU will open its 2009 conference schedule in New Jersey, taking on Seton Hall on Saturday, September 26, before wrapping up the weekend at Rutgers on September 27. The Hoyas play six more conference road matches, including Marquette (Oct. 16), Syracuse (Oct. 18), USF (Oct. 24), Villanova (Nov. 1), Notre Dame (Nov. 13), DePaul (Nov. 15).

GU will host six conference matches at McDonough Arena in 2009, including St. John's (Oct. 2), Connecticut (Oct. 4), Pittsburgh (Oct. 9), West Virginia (Oct. 11), Cincinnati (Nov. 6) and Louisville (Nov. 8).

"The Big East season is going to be competitive for us as well," Williams said. "With eight matches on the road, we've got our work cut out for us. We'll take on Louisville and Cincinnati, two NCAA participants at home in early November. Prior to that we'll have St. Johns and Connecticut who spent part of 2008 ranked in the region. We've also got Pitt and West Virginia coming to our place. Those are always exciting matches."
