WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer squad downed the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (1-2-1), 3-0, Friday evening in its first game at the adidas Classic hosted by Davidson College. The Hoyas controlled the pace of the game and improve to 2-1-1 on the season.
"Going from 2,000 screaming fans to a neutral pitch with almost no fans can be kind of a let down but our boys got the job done," said Head Coach Brian Wiese. "They (Coastal Carolina) are a dangerous team, they're a handful. The boys up front gave us trouble in the air which isn't something we're used to and I give them credit because in the first half, the game was in the balance."
Georgetown got on the board in the 29th minute as freshman Ian Christianson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Christian Life) scored his first collegiate goal for the Hoyas. Junior Seth C'deBaca (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia Prep) started the play tapping the ball to Chandler Diggs (Coppell, Texas/Coppell) who served it from the right side to Christianson waiting to shoot to the top of the net making the score 1-0.
"Ian's goal really settled us, Seth got it to Diggs to hit Ian for a one-time screamer," said Wiese. "It's great to get Ian involved, we're looking for production from him and he almost had two goals tonight hitting the post on his second shot. Chandler had a breakout game with a goal and an assist and that type of production from multiple sources is what we need."
The Blue & Gray outshot Coastal, 7-4, in the first half and had two saves.
Early in the second it was Diggs again making it happen as he scored in the 49th minute to give the Hoyas the 2-0 advantage. Georgetown added one more goal to secure the victory in the 78th as C'deBaca hit an unassisted shot into the left corner making the final 3-0 as the Hoyas went on to win.
Georgetown outshot Coastal Carolina 13-8 and keeper Matthew Brutto (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) tallied five saves to the Chants' zero. The Hoyas had only three shots on goal but managed to score on each attempt. Both squads were awarded two corner kicks.
"Today was a good team performance, we were able to get a lot of guys their first minutes of the year," said Wiese. "I knew this would be a tricky game and we still came out and found how to get a good result."
The Hoyas will be off on Saturday and will face UNC-Ashville on Sunday at 1 p.m., at Alumni Soccer Stadium. A live stats link will be available in the Georgetown men's soccer schedule on www.GUHoyas.com.
"These weekends with two games are about the teams that can refocus and prepare for the second match," Wiese said commenting on Sunday's matchup. "We can't have a let down. With every win we build momentum and every game is bigger and bigger. We need a good follow-up performance to carry us into BIG EAST play."
