Sept. 11, 2009
WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball program released its 2009-10 schedule Friday afternoon. The schedule features 16 BIG EAST matchups as well as three ACC opponents and an early-season tournament hosted by Purdue University. Georgetown will open the year on the road at Missouri State on Saturday, November 14. The Hoyas' first home date is scheduled for November 28 at McDonough Arena against Wofford College.
The Hoyas will play six games on the road to open 2009-10. After the trip to Missouri State, GU will travel south to face James Madison. Last season, the Blue & Gray defeated the Dukes 62-59 at McDonough Arena. Georgetown will then head to West Lafayette, Ind., for a three-game tournament at Purdue University. The road trip will finish up in Mount Pleasant, Mich., with a contest at Central Michigan the day before Thanksgiving.
December brings another round of challenges with three ACC opponents on the slate. After a trip to LaSalle University on December 1, Georgetown will host Wake Forest just four days later. The Hoyas defeated the Demon Deacons last season in the second round of the WNIT.
Games against Southwest Baptist (December 8), Richmond (December 12) and Jacksonville State (December 20) will test the Hoyas before NC State (December 22) comes to Washington, D.C. Last year Georgetown dropped a heart-breaking loss to the Lady Wolfpack, 61-58. A matchup at Clemson (December 30) rounds out 2009 as GU prepares for BIG EAST play.
Once again, the Hoyas will open conference play with Syracuse (January 2) and then leave for the first of two games against South Florida (January 9, February 16). Highlighting the conference home schedule are Providence (January 12), Louisville (January 16), DePaul (January 23), Rutgers (January 30), St. John's (February 2), Notre Dame (February 20) and Seton Hall (March 1). However, the Hoyas have some tough road trips traveling to Cincinnati (January 19), Marquette (January 27), Pittsburgh (February 10), West Virginia (February 13), Villanova (February 23) and Connecticut (February 27).
The game against the reigning national champion Huskies will be played at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. This will also be the location of the BIG EAST Tournament which will be held March 5-9.
The Hoyas will face 16 opponents that appeared in the 2008-09 postseason including eight NCAA Tournament squads with both teams from the national championship game on the Georgetown schedule. The Blue & Gray will also play eight teams that received bids to the WNIT including reigning-champ South Florida who GU will face twice this season.
