WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer team posted its third-straight shutout of the season Sunday as the Hoyas defeated the UNC-Asheville Bulldogs (1-3), 2-0, to win the Davidson adidas Classic. Four players were named to the all-tournament squad, the most among the four teams. With the win the Hoyas improved to 3-1-1 on the season as they prepare to open BIG EAST play on Friday at No. 4/3 St. John's.
"They (UNC-Asheville) made it a hard game for us, they're a good team," said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. "They hit the post twice and it could have gone in a different direction. I think our guys were frustrated we weren't getting more goals out of our chances, but it was still great to get our third shutout in a row."
Seth C'deBaca (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia Prep) scored his third goal of the season in the 25th minute after making something out of nothing. C'deBaca took a pass from midfielder Rob Burnett (Plano, Texas/Plano West) and fired from 25-yards out to make it 1-0.
The score would remain through the first half as the Hoyas went into the break with the slim advantage. The Blue & Gray outshot the Bulldogs 18-7 in the first half and took five corner kicks while UNC-Asheville was awarded none.
Georgetown held on to the lead for the next 55 minutes as the Hoyas controlled the pace of the game and had a number of good chances but couldn't capitalize on opportunities. Finally in the 82nd minute, Chandler Diggs (Coppell, Texas/Coppell) found the back of the net off of a breakaway started by Jose Colchao (Fairfax, Va./Lake Braddock Secondary School). Colchao slipped the ball through the center of the defense and Diggs lined up for a calm left-footed finish to secure the 2-0 victory.
"It's good to see that we're getting production from a lot of different people since that's one of the ways we'll be successful," said Wiese. "We needed to be sharper defensively and we'll need to tighten up a few things before St. John's."
Georgetown outshot UNC-Asheville 28-10 and took six corner kicks to the Bulldogs' one. Hoya keeper Mark Wilber (Tijeras, N.M./Albuquerque Academy) was credited with the win after posting two saves.
The Hoyas will open BIG EAST play on Friday evening with a game at No. 4/3 St. John's at 8 p.m. Live stats and a webcast will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
"I believe St. John's is one of the hardest places in the country to go and get a result," said Wiese. "We've got to tighten up a number of things to give ourselves a chance on Friday."
