WASHINGTON - Georgetown University men's soccer has a busy weekend ahead as the Hoyas host a pair of BIG EAST cross-divisional rivals at North Kehoe Field. Georgetown will take on Villanova (4-2-1, 1-1 BIG EAST) on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m., following the women's contest against Rutgers. The Hoyas will then welcome the Scarlet Knights (4-2, 2-0 BIG EAST) on Sunday for a 1 p.m. matchup. Georgetown is currently 4-2-1 overall and 1-1 in BIG EAST play after splitting a pair of road games last weekend.
The Hoyas fell to No. 15/15 St. John's last Friday evening by a score of 2-0 after holding the Red Storm scoreless for the first 80 minutes of the contest. The Blue & Gray rebounded on Sunday with a 2-0 win over Syracuse in Syracuse, N.Y. Sophomore Uche Onyeador (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) and freshman Andy Riemer (McLean, Va./Georgetown Prep) both scored for the Hoyas who had a number of players out sick and were forced to play some of the athletes out of position. The Syracuse win marked the Georgetown defense's fifth shutout of the season.
Villanova is 4-2-1 overall and 1-1 on the season after splitting with Connecticut and Providence last weekend to open BIG EAST play. The `Cats fell to UConn 2-1 on Friday evening but bounced back against Providence with a 1-0 victory. Nova is led by freshman Kyle Soroka who has two goals and one assist on the season. Georgetown is 18-12-5 all-time against the Wildcats. Last season's contest was abandoned after the end of regulation due to poor field conditions resulting in a 0-0 tie.
Rutgers is 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the BIG EAST after downing both Providence and UConn last weekend. The Scarlet Knights overcame an early deficit to win 2-1 in double overtime against Providence. Junior Yannick Salmon paced the Scarlet Knights in the victory over UConn scoring two goals to bring his point total up to eight on the season.
Friday's kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m., and Sunday's contest will begin at 1 p.m. A live webcast and live stats will be available for both games at www.GUHoyas.com. Friday's contest is a doubleheader with the women and both squads' Homecoming Game.
