NEW BRUSNWICK, N.J. - The Georgetown University volleyball team (10-7, 0-2 BIG EAST) dropped its second consecutive BIG EAST Conference match, falling to Rutgers (7-8), 3-0 (24-26, 25-27, 19-25) on Sunday afternoon. For the Hoyas it was their second loss after winning nine of their last 10.
Vanessa Dorismond (Cary, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) had 11 kills and hit .300 with four total blocks, while Ashley Malone had 25 assists and four kills, while hitting .600 in the loss.
The Hoyas looked dominant early in the first set, jumping out to an 8-1 lead behind the service of Kiersten McKoy and Sara Manley. GU would not let the Scarlet Knights within three points until late in the set, when a kill from Alex Jones brought Rutgers within a point at 24-23. Kyra Thompson followed with a service ace and a kill and Jones sealed the first set with a kill to stun the Hoyas 26-24.
GU would again take an early lead in the second set, going up by five points at 9-4 before Rutgers stormed back. The Scarlet Knights tied the score at 13, as the team's would play point for point the rest of the way, with 12 tie scores and three lead changes. The Hoyas had the first set point at 24-23, then again at 25-24, but Rutgers broke them both times and went on to win 27-25 to take a 2-0 advantage.
Rutgers opened the third set on a 4-0 run and led most of the way. GU would close to within two points at 19-17, but the Scarlet Knights would score the next five points behind Caitlin Saxton's serve to take a 24-17 lead, eventually sealing the game and match with a 25-19 third set victory.
The Hoyas return home to McDonough Arena on Tuesday, September 29 when they take on VCU at 7 p.m.
