WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer team handily defeated the Seton Hall University Pirates (3-7-1, 1-2 BIG EAST), 6-0, on Wednesday at North Kehoe Field in a BIG EAST matchup. Freshman Steve Neumann (New Hope, Pa./Council Rock North) had two goals as Georgetown made it five wins in a row and posted its fifth shutout of the season. The Hoyas are now 7-4-1 overall and 3-1 in BIG EAST play.
"Seton Hall has some very talented players and for the first fifteen minutes I thought they bossed the game," said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. "Luckily they never got behind us, but once we got that first goal I thought we looked good. The first goal is the hardest to get and after that it didn't look like a midweek game anymore."
After a few shaky minutes early on, the Blue & Gray got down to business following a helicopter delay. In the 26th minute, Neumann took a free kick near the endline, serving it into the box. Sophomore defender Tommy Muller (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Trinity Prep) dove toward the net for the header to score his third of the season and the eventual game winner.
Just two minutes later, Chandler Diggs (Coppell, Texas/Coppell) managed to track down a deflection off of a blocked shot and one-time it back into the net to put the Hoyas up by two.
In the 33rd minute, Neumann tallied his second of the afternoon after senior Seth C'deBaca (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia Prep) slid it into the box and classmate Rob Burnett (Plano, Texas/Plano West) made a nice play to find the freshman. Neumann added one more before the break in the 42nd minute after the combination of C'deBaca and senior Henry Tembon (London, England/School at Church Farm) put it high in the middle of the box and Neumann headed it in. The Blue & Gray led 4-0 at the half.
The second half saw the Hoyas continue to dominate on offense. In the 55th minute, senior Jose Colchao (Fairfax, Va./Lake Braddock Secondary School) scored off a deflected shot from Ian Christianson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Christian Life). The Blue & Gray finished off the scoring run with an aerial goal from freshman Gabe Padilla (Sacramento, Calif./Jesuit) after Ibu Otegbeye (Winter Park, Fla./Winter Park) took it down the left side off of a pass from freshman Joey Dillon (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams).
The Hoyas had a number of good looks late in the game and eventually got the 6-0 victory.
"We've hit our stride at the perfect time," said Wiese. "We could have won the first five of the season, but broken down now and we'd really be in trouble. Instead we struggled a little in the beginning, but we were able to regroup and it's made us a better team for this point of the season."
Georgetown outshot Seton Hall, 19-8, and took five corner kicks to the Pirates' two. Brutto got the win in the net with three saves, while Kevin Bonder took the loss with seven saves to his credit.
The Blue & Gray will host Villanova on Saturday at North Kehoe Field at 1 p.m. Live stats and an audio-only broadcast will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
