WASHINGTON - The Georgetown volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss to No. 23 Cincinnati today at Fifth Third Arena as the Bearcats extend their home win streak to 38 with set scores of 10-25, 17-25, 16-25. The Hoyas slip to a 13-12 record and a 3-6 mark in the BIG EAST Conference while Cincinnati improves to 20-4 overall and 8-1 in league play.
"We struggled to get our offense going this afternoon," Assistant Coach Jake Lawrence said. "By the time we found our rhythm, we were in too big of a hole. Cincinnati is having a great year.
"Today's match was a good test to see where our team stands and what we need to work on in order to finish the year strong. I know we're going to get back to work on Tuesday and prepare for our home match on Friday against Rutgers."
The third and deciding set proved to be the cleanest-played set for both teams with the Hoyas hitting .167. Despite dropping the first point, GU strung together four kills in five points to take a quick 4-2 lead. The Hoyas continued the efficient level of play and stayed even with the Bearcats through a tie at nine but errant play would plague Georgetown as Cincinnati went on to win the set and match.
Senior Kortney Robinson (Pleasant Grove, Utah/Pleasant Grove) led the Hoyas with nine kills and a .222 hitting percentage while freshman Brooke Bachesta (Sammamish, Wash./Eastside Catholic) tallied seven kills and a .174 hitting percentage. Junior Ashley Malone (San Jose, Calif./St. Francis) recorded 23 of the Hoyas' 27 assists while junior Tory Rezin (Morris, Ill./Morris) led the team with 13 digs followed by Robinson and Malone with eight apiece.
The Bearcats showed why they are tabbed a top-25 team by maintaining a hitting percentage of at least .360 through each set (.367, .361, .478) and recording 13, 14 and 13 kills in sets one, two and three, respectively.
The Hoyas return home to McDonough Arena for their next weekend of matches as they host BIG EAST Conference opponents Rutgers on Friday, Oct. 29 at 8 p.m. and Seton Hall on Sunday, Oct. 31 at 2 p.m.
