WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's tennis team closed out its fall season this weekend competing at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championship. The Blue & Gray had players competing in singles and doubles at the event which includes 12 Division I regional championships and over 8,000 student-athletes.
Graduate student Stephanie Wetmore (Mississauga, Ontario/Appleby College) won in the main draw in singles play. She earned the 13th seed for the regional and defeated Holly Johnson from Virginia Tech, 7-6(5), 6-2, to open play in the round of 64. Wetmore fell in a battle with Anik Cepeda from William & Mary, 6-2, 6-4, in the next round.
In the qualifying rounds, junior Lauren Greco (Oakmont, Pa./Shady Side Academy) worked her way into the main draw with a pair of victories. She defeated Kara Kucin from Marshall, 6-3, 6-4, and Carmen Sandor from Penn State, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3.
The Hoyas had a pair wins in doubles play. Wetmore and Greco earned a bye in the first round and defeated a pair from Howard, 8-3, to advance to the quarterfinals. Additionally, freshman Madeline Jaeger (Laguna Beach, Calif./Laguna Beach) and sophomore Vicky Sekely (Mississaga, Ontario/Lorne Park Secondary School) won a round of 64 matchup against a pair from Old Dominion, 8-5.
Georgetown has finished up fall play, but will return to the courts in January to begin the spring portion of the season.
