WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University sailing team continued its season by competing in two regattas on October 16-17, 2010 and three regattas on October 9-10, 2010.
At the Navy Fall Invitational held in Annapolis, Md. on October 16-17, 2010, Georgetown nabbed a third-place finish competing against 19 other schools. In the A division, Charlie Buckingham (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor), Ashley Phillips (Charleston, S.C./Ashley Hall), and Teddy Mark (Rye, N.Y./Rye Country Day) wrapped up a fourth-place finish for Georgetown with 125 points. In the B division, Scott Furnary (Rye, N.Y./Rye Country Day), Kate Canty (Vero Beach, Fla./Deerfield Academy), and Sam Oldroyd (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Preparatory School) suffered a late disqualification to finish at ninth place with 157 points. Chris Barnard (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) came in fifth place in the C division with 137 points, while Michael Schalka (Seattle, Wash./Dartmoor) and Matt Gowell (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) finished the regatta with 157 points in the D division. Overall, Georgetown placed in third place behind St. Mary's and Charleston.
The Hoyas sent two pairs to the Yale Women's Intersectional, held in New Haven, Conn. amidst heavy wind on October 16-17. Georgetown's A division pair, consisting of Sydney Bolger (Long Beach, Calif./Poly High School) and Leah Volk (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay), ended the competition with a sixth-place finish, scoring 63 points. In the B division, Lauren Burke (Dartmouth, Mass./Tabor Academy) and Rebecca Evans (Cohasset, Mass./Milton Academy) started slowly, with a DNF after their boat flipped due to heavy wind in the first race, but recovered in subsequent races, and finished in fourth place with 54 points. Overall, Georgetown came in at sixth place for the regatta out of 18 teams.
The previous weekend, on October 9-10, 2010, Georgetown sent three sailors to the Carl Van Duyne MAISA Singlehanded Championship, held at Navy. Charlie Buckingham (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) came in at first-place with 81 points, while Chris Barnard (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) finished at fourth place with 125 points. Michael Schalka (Seattle, Wash./Dartmoor) scored 152 points for a ninth-place finish. Charlie Buckingham became the first person to win the Men's Singlehanded Championship four years in a row, and Buckingham and Barnard both qualified for the ICSA Singlehanded Nationals in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Also held that weekend was the Navy Fall Women's Intersectional. Amanda Taselaar (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) and Ashley Phillips competed in the A division, finishing in the 11th place with 171 points. In the B division, Nancy Hagood (Charleston, S.C./Ashley Hall) and Kate Canty also came in at 11th place, but with 154 points. Merritt Moran (Rochester, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland High School) sailed in the C division, scoring 189 points for a 16th-place finish. Overall, the Hoyas placed 15th out of 18 teams at the regatta.
The Hoyas won the only home regatta of the fall at the Tom Curtis Regatta on October 9-10, 2010 against 17 other teams. Michael Campbell (San Diego, Calif./Bishops School) and Leslie Cowen (Dover, Mass./Tabor Academy) sailed for Georgetown on Saturday in the A division, winning all six of their races that day. With Ryan Whelan (East Greenwich, R.I./Moses Brown School) and Genevieve Burgoyne (Seattle, Wash./Holy Names Academy) taking Campbell and Cowen's place on Sunday, the Hoyas finished at second place in the A division. In the B division, Matt Gowell and Genevieve Burgoyne sailed for the Blue & Gray on Saturday, followed by Sam Oldroyd and Stephanie Franco (Lima, Peru/Colegio Roosevelt) on Sunday, and Georgetown finished the division in the first place. Georgetown ended up winning the event by four points ahead of the second-place Navy.
At the Storm Trysail Big Boat event on October 9-10, 2010, Georgetown came in at fourth place. Sailing his family's boat Patriot, Scott Furnary served as the skipper, with Andrew Mason (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar High School), Iacopo Lash (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich High School), Simon Chivi (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel High School0, Dave Nicol (Loudonville, N.Y./LaSalle Institute), Mike Clark (Litchfield, N.H./Campbell High School), Greg Miller (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Preparatory), Kelly Meyering (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich High School), and Tory Lynch (New York, N.Y./Horace Mann) on the crew.
This weekend, October 30-31, 2010, the Georgetown University sailing team will be competing at the Top 9 Regatta at Kings Point, N.Y. and the War Memorial Regatta at Geneva, N.Y.
