WASHINGTON -
The Georgetown University sailing team continued its form this season with three top-five finishes this past weekend, October 2-3, 2010.
At the Senators Cup held in St. Mary's City, Md., Georgetown nabbed a second-place finish competing against 17 other schools. In the A division, Michael Campbell (San Diego, Calif./Bishops School) and Annalee Leggett (Manchester, Mass./Phillips Academy Andover) sailed on Saturday for the Hoyas, followed by Chris Barnard (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) and Hilary Kenyon (Wayzata, Minn./The Blake School) on Sunday. After a strong performance on Saturday by Campbell and Leggett, Barnard and Kenyon won all four races on Sunday to wrap up a third-place finish for Georgetown in the A division. In the B division, Lauren Burke (Dartmouth, Mass./Tabor Academy) and Rebecca Evans (Cohasset, Mass./Milton Academy) sailed on Sunday, with Amanda Taselaar and Tory Lynch (New York, N.Y./Horace Mann) following on Sunday. Burke and Evans sailed well the first day, while Taselaar and Lynch placed first twice and second and fourth once each to give Georgetown a first-place finish in the B division. Overall, Georgetown scored 108, placing second only behind Navy, which scored 104.
The Georgetown sailing team also competed at the T.S. Stern Match Race Regatta, held at the College of Charleston. Scott Furnary (Rye, N.Y./Rye Country Day), Andrew Mason (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar), and Lincoln Heilner (Johannesburg, South Africa/St. John's College) match raced together for the first time together. Despite a 0-2 start, the Hoyas won the next four races, advancing to the semifinals, where Georgetown lost to the College of Charleston, 3-1. The Hoyas therefore finished third place overall.
The Hoyas sent two pairs to the Jesuit Cup, held at Fordham University in New York City, last weekend. Georgetown's A division pair, consisting of Dan Eichler (Providence, R.I./Moses Brown) and Sam Oldroyd (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Preparatory School), ended the competition with a third-place finish. In the B division, Dave Nicol and Merritt Moran (Rochester, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland High School) finished in second place. Overall, Georgetown came in at second place for the regatta.
This weekend, October 9-10, 2010, the Georgetown University sailing team will be competing at the MAISA Men's Singlehanded Championship at Annapolis, Md., Navy Fall Women's Intersectional at Annapolis, Md., and Offshore Regatta at Larchmont, N.Y., in addition to hosting the Tom Curtis Regatta (South #2) at Washington, D.C.
