WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University volleyball squad (13-8, 3-2 BIG EAST) defeated West Virginia (12-8, 2-3 BE) 3-2. Brooke Bachesta (Sammamish, Wash./Eastside Catholic) recorded a career-high 22 kills, with four digs, five total blocks and a .311 hitting percentage. Ashley Malone (San Jose, Calif./St. Francis) tallied 54 assists, 15 digs and five kills while Tory Rezin (Morris, Ill./Morris) notched 19 digs in the Hoya win. The set scores were 25-21, 20-25, 25-19, 23-25, 16-14.
"We were on a rollercoaster but managed again to pull it out," said Head Coach Arlisa Williams. "WVU was number one in the nation in digs per game and we out dug them. It was just a total team effort."
In the deciding fifth set, the Blue & Gray took the first three points before a back-and-forth ensued, leaving the score tied at four, seven, eight, and nine. The Hoyas took control with two timely kills from Malone to take the lead at 13-9, but West Virginia fought back. With the scored tied at 14, Bachesta, who recorded four kills in the set, connected for two kills to close out the set at 16-14.
The two teams traded points early in the fourth set before GU fell behind by 16-9. The Hoyas fought back with three kills from Samantha Trauth (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North), who had four in the set and 11 on the match, to come within one point at 23-22 on a service ace from Malone. GU fought off one set point before falling to WVU 25-23. Rezin and Malone each notched five digs in the set.
The third set featured eight ties and five lead changes. With the score tied at 15, the Hoyas capitalized on errant West Virginia play to score seven of eight and go ahead 22-16. WVU fought off two match points before GU closed out the set at 25-19. Bachesta notched five kills and Malone tallied 11 assists as the team hit .394 on the set.
The Blue & Gray lost its early momentum and dropped the second set, 25-20. The Hoyas fell early in the first set but were able to tie the score at 17 after being down 12-5. GU took a 19-18 lead and finished out the set at 25-21. Bachesta was four for six while Malone added another 11 assists in the set.
The Hoyas continue BIG EAST play on the road as they take on Pittsburgh on Sunday, Oct. 10 at 2 p.m.
