WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer team will make a trip to Providence College on Saturday for a 1 p.m. matchup at Glay Field. The Hoyas are 5-4-1 on the season after winning a midweek game at American University and downing then-No. 21 West Virginia University last weekend. The Hoyas look to prolong a three-game win streak beginning against Adelphi University.
Georgetown is 1-1 against BIG EAST opponents this season. The Hoyas previously lost at Cincinnati, 2-0, but won 1-0 against West Virginia with sophomore Ian Christianson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Christian Life) hitting a penalty kick. The American game was the Blue & Gray's final nonconference game of the season. Georgetown went 4-3-1 in nonconference play.
On Wednesday, the Hoyas defeated American, 3-2. Senior captain Jose Colchao (Fairfax, Va./Lake Braddock Secondary School) scored the first goal, assisted by classmate Seth C'deBaca (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia Prep). Freshman Steve Neumann (New Hope, Pa./Council Rock North) followed with the second goal of the game, assisted by Christianson and freshman Gabe Padilla (Sacramento, Calif./Jesuit). American tied the game with two goals, but Neumann scored the game winner in the 85th minute, assisted by sophomore Andy Riemer (McLean, Va./Georgetown Prep).
Neumann leads the team in offense with three goals and four assists for 10 points, followed by Christianson, who has two goals and three assists for seven points this season. Senior goalkeeper Matthew Brutto (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) has 39 saves on the year.
Providence (5-3-1, 0-2 BIG EAST) is looking for its first conference win of the season. The Friars lost their last game on October 3 at Notre Dame, 2-1. Their game against Boston University on Wednesday was cancelled due to inclement weather so the squad has had a week's rest. Through nine matches, PC has been led by senior Matt Marcin and sophomore Wilder Arboleda, who have both recorded three goals and one assist for seven points each. Goalkeeper Jhojan Obando averages 1.21 goals allowed per game.
Georgetown is tied in the series with Providence, 10-10-1. The last time Georgetown faced Providence was on October 31, 2009 at North Kehoe Field, when the Hoyas fell to the Friars 2-1 in overtime.
Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m., at Glay Field on the campus of Providence College. Live stats for the game will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
