Georgetown Sailing Wins Coed Atlantic Coast Championships

Nov. 15, 2010

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University sailing team concluded its fall season at the Atlantic Coast Championships on November 13-14, 2010.

At the Coed Atlantic Coast Championships held in Annapolis, Md., Georgetown defeated 17 other schools to win the championship. In the A division, All-American Charlie Buckingham (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) and Ashley Phillips (Charleston, S.C./Ashley Hall) grabbed the top finish with 27 points. The pair, who won the A division at the conference championships, won their first race and never finished worse than eighth place in a race. In the B division, All-American Scott Furnary (Rye, N.Y./Rye Country Day) and Katherine Canty (Vero Beach, Fla./Deerfield Academy) also came in first place. Furnary and Canty struggled in the beginning, finishing 11th, eighth, and 11th, respectively in the first three races, but went on to finish no worse than second place for the five other races en route to capturing first place. Georgetown ended the weekend with 66 points, 25 ahead of the second place Boston College.

This was the second time in history that the Hoyas won the Coed Atlantic Coast Championships, with the previous victory in 1999. The win at the Atlantic Coast Championships was also the second triumph of the season for Buckingham, who won the 2010 ICSA Singlehanded National Championship the previous weekend. The coed crew is predicted to rank first at the end of the fall season.

The Hoyas also sent their women's crews to the Women's Atlantic Coast Championships, hosted by Eckerd College and the University of South Florida in St. Petersburg, Fla. In the A division, All-American Sydney Bolger (Long Beach, Calif./Poly High School) and Rebecca Evans (Cohasset, Mass./Milton Academy) nabbed fourth place with 100 points. In the B division, Amanda Taselaar (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) and Nancy Hagood (Charleston, S.C./Ashley Hall) shared the skippering duty, with Tory Lynch (New York, N.Y./Horace Mann) as the crew, as they came in 10th place with 140 points. Overall, the Blue & Gray finished in fifth place with 241 points, nine points behind fourth-place Tufts. St. Mary's won the championship.

The Hoyas will next race in the first regatta of the spring season, at the Rose Bowl Regatta in Long Beach, Calif., on January 8-9, 2011.
