WASHINGTON - The No. 12/13 Georgetown University women's basketball team traveled to St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands to play in the Reef Division of the 11th Annual Paradise Jam at the University of the Virgin Islands. The Hoyas will play three games in three days beginning Thursday in the tournament run by Basketball Travelers, Inc. A live webcast will be available for all three games at www.GUHoyas.com.
Georgetown is 3-0 on the season after opening with a trio of home games at McDonough Arena. The Blue & Gray opened the season with a 79-41 victory over Augusta State. The Hoyas then downed No. 21 Maryland, 53-45, in front of a huge home crowd. Last Friday, Georgetown staved off La Salle, 50-46, to continue its 18-game home win streak.
Sophomore shooting guard Sugar Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday. Rodgers averaged 14.7 ppg over the three-game span as well as 3.3 rpg. She also had nine steals, five assists and went 9-of-10 from the free throw line. The sophomore led Georgetown in scoring in all three games.
The Reef Division features Tennessee, Georgia Tech, Georgetown and Missouri. Three of those teams earned berths in the 2010 NCAA Tournament with two teams making return trips to the Paradise Jam. Tennessee claimed the St. John Division championship in 2005 and Georgia Tech placed second in the 2003 St. John Division tournament.
The Blue & Gray will open the tourney with a game against Georgia Tech on Thursday at 8 p.m. ET. The Yellow Jackets are 3-2 on the season, and have gone 2-1 in their last three home games. Georgia Tech is led by Tyaunna Marshall who is averaging 14.8 ppg. This will be the first meeting between the squads.
On Friday, Georgetown will take on Missouri at 5:45 p.m. ET. The Tigers are 1-1 on the year with a 67-40 victory at Memphis before falling, 81-73, at Eastern Illinois. Christine Flores leads the team in both points and rebounds averaging 20.5 ppg and 10.0 rpg. Friday marks the first meeting between the teams.
The Hoyas will conclude with No. 4/4 Tennessee on Saturday at 8 p.m. ET. The Lady Vols are 4-0 on the season including a 63-50 victory over the BIG EAST's Louisville. Meighan Simmons leads the team with 17.5 ppg. Georgetown has not faced Tennessee in its program history. The game will mark the second ranked opponent GU will play this season.

This year's women's event features two tournaments consisting of four teams. The Island Division features Iowa State, West Virginia, Virginia and Texas Christian. All four teams earned berths in the 2010 NCAA Tournament with three teams making return trips to the Paradise Jam. Virginia was the runner-up in the 2005 St. Thomas Division tournament; West Virginia placed third in the 2003 St. John Division tournament; and Iowa State placed third in the 2003 St. Thomas Division tournament.
