WASHINGTON - The Georgetown volleyball team (15-13, 5-7 BIG EAST) defeated Connecticut (4-18, 2-9 BE), 3-2 on Friday night at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Conn. Vanessa Dorismond (Cary, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) recorded a match-high .419 hitting percentage, with 17 kills and 10 total blocks. Kortney Robinson (Pleasant Grove, Utah/Pleasant Grove) led the Hoyas with 19 kills, contributing four total blocks and 12 digs. The set scores were 25-22, 28-26, 21-25, 17-25, 15-9.
The Hoyas came out to a quick two-set lead to start the match as they capitalized on open opportunities late in the first and second sets. In set one, the Hoyas pulled away with a 19-17 lead off a kill from Robinson but a strategic Husky timeout, the UConn was able to pull ahead 20-19 on errant GU play. After the Hoyas called a timeout of their own, Robinson tallied another kill and an ace off the serve of Tory Rezin (Morris, Ill./Morris) gave the Hoyas the 21-20 lead. Slipping behind by one point again (22-21), the Hoya called another timeout and Dorismond rebutted with a kill from an Ashley Malone (San Jose, Calif./St. Francis) set to knot the score at 22. A UConn error and another Robinson kill gave the Hoyas set point as a key Hoya block from Dorismond and Malone gave GU the first set, 25-22.
The second set saw the Hoyas rally through inconsistent play. Hitting .128 in set one, the Hoyas hit a mere .071 in set two. Falling behind by five points (18-13), Georgetown's Annalee Abell (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) tallied a kill followed by a five-point run behind Rezin's serve switched the momentum in favor of the Hoyas. Both teams traded points for the remainder of the set with the Blue & Gray stifling three set-point opportunities for the Huskies. Another kill from Robinson created the last stalemate of the game at 26 before a Robinson-Dorismond block gave the Hoyas their first set point. An error from UConn gave the Hoyas set two, 28-26, and a two-set lead.
Unfortunately, Georgetown's streaky play followed them in sets three and four as the Hoyas failed to hit above .100 in either set while the Huskies seemed to be on the upswing hitting .088 in set three and .184 in set four.
With the score tied at two sets apiece, the fifth and deciding set began on yet another pair of back-to-back kills from Robinson and Dorismond, respectively. Georgetown had control of the fifth set, taking the first three points and never giving up the lead the entire set. With the score tied just once (5-5), the Hoyas were again successful behind Rezin's serve as they took a commanding 13-7 lead stringing together five-straight points. The match ended on back-to-back kills from Robinson as the Hoyas took set five, 15-9.
Robinson ended the match with a team-best 19 kills and a .245 hitting percentage, second to Dorismond's .451. Robinson added 12 digs for the double-double while Dorismond's 17 kills and 10 total blocks were good enough for her own double-double. Malone recorded 48 assists while Rezin ended the match with 24 digs and three service aces.
Though Head Coach Arlisa Williams was not on the sidelines for this game, the Hoyas are now 1-0 under Williams since having her second child, Sebastian Emanuel, with her husband Simon.
The Hoyas will continue on the road, facing St. John's on Sunday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m.
