WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team finished out nonconference play Thursday evening with a 75-54 victory over the Clemson University Tigers (6-8). Sophomore Sugar Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) tied her season best with 28 points, while junior Rubylee Wright (Latta, S.C./Latta) scored a career-high 16 points as the Hoyas improved to 12-3 on the season.
Leading by 11 points at the break, the Blue & Gray managed to build a 15-point lead before Rodgers took over the game scoring 14 of GU's next 16 points to take a 28-point advantage, 63-35. The Tigers clawed their way back getting within 20, but Georgetown controlled the pace to get the eventual 75-54 win.
The first half was a different story as the Tigers shot well and forced the Hoyas into quick shots. At 7:48, a layup gave Clemson its first lead of the contest. However, an 8-0 run including a three from senior Monica McNutt (Suitland, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) and five points from Rodgers put the Blue & Gray on top for good.
"I think we were just a little too fast in the first half," said Georgetown Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy. "We were running our plays, but we got to the spot before the ball. As soon as we slowed it down a little and ran it to perfection we settled in."
The Hoyas closed out the half with a 6-0 run to give GU its first double-digit lead of the game, 38-28.
Rodgers led all scorers with 28 points, while Wright added 16 and junior Tia Magee (Tulsa, Okla./Jenks) posted 13. Freshman Andrea White (Lancaster, Va./Lancaster) led the squad with five boards.
Georgetown shot 43.1 percent from the field and 43.5 percent from beyond the arc. The Hoyas also outrebounded the Tigers, 36-33, and forced 21 turnovers on nine steals.
The victory marked GU's fourth over an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent this season and the Hoyas' final nonconference game.
Georgetown will open BIG EAST play on Tuesday against Syracuse. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., at McDonough Arena. Live stats and a webcast featuring Ryan Sakamoto will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
