Coral Gables, Fla. - The No. 11/12 Georgetown University women's basketball team dropped a tough, 81-72, decision in overtime to the University of Miami Hurricanes (8-1) Tuesday evening at the BankUnited Center. The Blue & Gray drops to 7-2 on the season as the team looks ahead to two remaining road contests this week.
A three by Sugar Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) with 21 seconds remaining tied the score at 68 in regulation as the sophomore shot faked off of an inbounds play and sank a trey in the corner. A stop on the other end forced Georgetown's first overtime game of the year.
Georgetown matched the Canes early, but a three and a disputed intentional foul call late in overtime gave Miami a five-point lead midway through the extra period and the Hoyas couldn't recover.
A three from Monica McNutt (Suitland, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) at 4:35 gave Georgetown its first lead of the second half, 63-62. The Canes quickly countered to gain a three-point advantage after a layup and a pair of free throws. Rodgers sank a pair of free throws to cut the lead to one, 66-65, with a minute to play, but free throws on the other end once against put the Hoyas down by three as the team played from behind a majority of the game.
Miami came out firing in the second, hitting four treys and a three-point play within the first ten minutes. Georgetown struggled to match trailing by as much as nine and acquiring a number of fouls.
The Canes jumped out to a lead early on as the up-tempo pace was set by both squads. Despite sloppy play, the Hoyas managed to stay in the game and take a small advantage late in the half. Three's down the stretch from Rubylee Wright (Latta, S.C./Latta) and Rodgers as well as big plays down low from Andrea White (Lancaster, Va./Lancaster) and Adria Crawford (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) helped the Hoyas on offense.
The squads went into the break tied at 30.
Rodgers led the squad with 22 points while Wright added 13 and McNutt had 12. GU outrebounded Miami 55-33, but committed 23 turnovers to the Cane's 14. The Blue & Gray shot 38.4 percent for the game and had a 22-14 deficit in fouls including Miami's 9-3 advantage at the end of regulation.
