WASHINGTON - It was two months in the making, but the No. 13/11 Georgetown University women's basketball squad finally managed to take on the Jacksonville State Gamecocks (9-19) Thursday evening at McDonough Arena. The game was made up from mid-December when a snowstorm grounded the Gamecocks in Alabama. Despite playing their third game in six days, the Hoyas managed to come out on top, 70-39, to improve to 24-4 on the season.
The Georgetown press proved to be too much for the Gamecocks just minutes into the game. A steal by sophomore Rubylee Wright (Latta, S.C./Latta) led to a layup from freshman Ta'Shauna "Sugar" Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) to open the game as the Hoyas never trailed. The press allowed the Blue & Gray to get easy buckets on the other end to thwart tough shooting early on.
At 5:50, a layup by Rodgers sparked an 11-0 run which put the Hoyas up by 19 with less than three minutes to play in the half. Sophomore Latia Magee (Tulsa, Okla./Jenks) added four points in the balanced run.
The Hoyas managed two more scores before the end of the half making the score 33-11 at the half and holding the Gamecocks to a season low and marking the fewest points allowed in a half for GU this season.
Monica McNutt (Suitland, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) led Georgetown with 15 points hitting four three's in the half as well as pulling down a team-best four boards. Magee added six points and two rebounds. The Hoyas outrebounded the Gamecocks 20-18 and also forced 20 turnovers on ten steals.
The Blue & Gray continued to dominate in the second half despite changing up the lineup for a number of different looks. GU went up by as much as 27 early on, but substitutions disrupted the defense as JSU came back cutting it to 19. That would be as close as the Gamecocks would get as the Hoyas went on to win 70-39.
McNutt led the way with 18 points and Rodgers added 12 as well as a team-high six rebounds. The Hoyas got some big minutes from a number of reserves with freshmen Vanessa Moore (Hackettstown, N.J./Pope XXIII) and Sydney Wilson (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College Prep) each tallying four points. GU outrebounded JSU 41-24 and forced 31 turnovers on 17 steals. The Hoyas shot 42.9 percent in the game.
Georgetown will have just a day off before facing No. 1/1 Connecticut in the midst of a 66-game win streak on Saturday at noon. The game will be televised locally on MASN live from the XL Center in Hartford.
