WASHINGTON - Former Georgetown University men's soccer standout Dan Gargan resumed his Major League Soccer career last week as the defender signed with Toronto FC just hours prior to the team's season opener. Gargan has played with a number of professional squads over his career and spent much of preseason with Toronto.
Gargan, 27, was drafted in the third round (43rd overall) by the Colorado Rapids in the 2005 MLS Supplemental Draft. The following season he was awarded the "Rapids Most Improved Player". He made a total of 49 appearances for the Rapids before moving on to Chivas USA in April of 2008. Shortly after, he retired from the game citing personal reasons but resurfaced in the USL First Division with the Puerto Rico Islanders in 2009. He finished with 12 appearances and one goal with the Islanders.
At Georgetown, Gargan was an All-BIG EAST player and captain for the squad. He was the second-leading scorer as a senior with four goals and seven assists for 15 points. The Philadelphia, Pa., native, was Second Team All-BIG EAST as a senior and on the third team as a junior when he was named team MVP. He was also a two-time NSCAA All-Region honoree.
Gargan ranks 19th on Georgetown's all-time scoring list with 40 career points and is 22nd in career goals with 11. He is one of 14 Hoyas that have gone on to play professionally.
The defender was available for Toronto's opener against the Columbus Crew, the Reds will play at New England on Saturday.
