SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Georgetown University women's tennis squad closed out the regular season on a high note Friday defeating the Seton Hall University Pirates 5-2 in South Orange, N.J. Georgetown swept doubles play and had some early wins in singles to improve to 7-11 overall.
In doubles, the Hoyas won all three matches to take the point and get things started early. All three tandems were forced to battle for the win, but none so much as Elizabeth Sullivan (Potomac, Md./National Cathedral School) and Victoria Sekely (Mississaga, Ontario/Lorne Park Secondary School) at No. 1. The pair went down 4-1, but managed to battle back and get the 8-5 victory.
No. 2 Lauren Greco (Oakmont, Pa./Shady Side Academy) and No. 4 Alex Sebia (Plains, Pa./Scranton Prep) posted two wins 6-0, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-2, respectively in singles. At No. 6, Samantha Martin (Manilus, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manilus) clinched it winning 6-2, 6-2.
Despite already securing the victory, it was Sullivan who had one of the most exciting matches of the day. The junior lost the first set 4-6, but won the second in a tiebreaker 7-6(5) and the third 10-7 as Georgetown went on for the 5-2 win.
The Hoyas will wait for the BIG EAST Tournament selections to come out on Monday to see if they will receive a berth in the conference championship.
