WASHINGTON - Georgetown University freshman shooting guard Ta'Shauna "Sugar" Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) has been named Honorable Mention All-America by the Associated Press. The freshman is one of just 46 players nationwide to receive a nod to one of the four teams. She is also one of just five freshmen to earn All-America distinction.
Rodgers led the Hoyas to their best season in program history with a record of 26-7 and a mark of 13-3 in BIG EAST play. Georgetown spent a majority of the season in the national rankings moving as high as No. 12 in the AP Poll and No. 11 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll. The Blue & Gray finished the regular season tied for second in the BIG EAST earning the third seed in the conference tournament. Georgetown was awarded an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament receiving the five seed in the Memphis Region. The Hoyas downed Marist in the NCAA Tournament before falling to eventual Final Four-contender Baylor.
The freshman shooting guard was a huge part of the Hoya turnaround leading the squad averaging 17.6 ppg. She was also proficient on the defensive end ranking third on the squad in steals with 58 and averaging 3.7 rpg. Rodgers was third on the team in assists with 60 only ranking behind the Hoyas' two point guards.
Rodgers scored in double figures in all but three games this season and led Georgetown in scoring 24 times as well as in rebounding five times. As a freshman she is already the all-time leader for three's in a season (83) and ranks among the top four for point in a season with 574.
The Suffolk, Va., native earned BIG EAST Rookie of the Week honors five times this season and was named First Team All-BIG EAST as well as the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year.
Rodgers is just the second Hoya in program history to earn a place on the AP All-America Team and the first underclassman. Georgetown's only other All-American was Rebekkah Brunson who earned Honorable Mention as a senior in 2004.
The freshman was one of eight players from the BIG EAST to earn All-America.
