New Brunswick, N.J. - The Georgetown University men's crew traveled to New Brunswick, N.J on Saturday to face George Washington and Rutgers on the Raritan River. All races were rowed into a strong headwind.
The first race of the afternoon featured the Georgetown freshman eight stroke Matt Stewart, Henry Hoffstot, Sam Viola, Mike Hennessy, Charles de Pentheny-O'Kelly, Tim Broughton, Ben Holtzmuller, Bow Mike Blommer and coxswain Nathaniel Liu. The freshman eight walked from the beginning of their race and finished in 6:46.9, 15.2 seconds in front of Rutgers who finished in 7:02.1. GW came across the line in third in a time of 7:07.5.
In the next race, the junior varsity eight stroke Tom Skomba, Matt Funk, Chris Kozak, Cameron Hoerner, Greg Charte, Kyle Textor, Colin MacDougall, bow Matt Matyjek, and coxswain Sean Liu blasted off the start to lead by open water at the 500 meter mark. GW would mount a charge in the middle 1,000 meters to pass Georgetown, going on to win the race in a time of 6:50.8. Georgetown held on to finish second in a time of 7:08.4 to Rutgers in 7:12.4.
The varsity eight, consisting of stroke Paul Keith, Andrew Federer, Joe Ledvina, Patrick Opdyke, Brian Chismar, Andy Olsen, Sean Greany, bow Peter Holowesko, and coxswain John Geager drove off the line and stayed level with crosstown rival GW in the first half of the race. The Colonials walked over a length on Georgetown in the second half of the race, but the Hoyas continued to push back. With a strong finish Georgetown pulled back in contact with the Colonials varsity finishing in 6:36.8, 1.7 seconds behind GW 's 6:35.1.
Georgetown Crew concludes its regular season with Temple University next Saturday on the Schuylkill river in Philadelphia, PA.
