Albuquerque, N.M. - The No. 20 Georgetown University men's soccer squad fell to the University of Denver Pioneers (2-1-1), 3-1, on the second day of the TLC Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Lobo Invitational hosted by the University of New Mexico. The Blue & Gray started strong, but faltered late in the contest to move to 2-2 on the season. Sophomore Jimmy Nealis (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) was named to the all-tournament squad.
The Hoyas got on the board first when sophomore midfielder Ian Christianson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Christian Life) was fouled in the box and connected on the ensuing penalty kick in the 16th minute.
Late in the half, the Pioneers struck on back-to-back goals including a penalty kick in the 34th minute and tally off of a free kick two minutes later. This put the Hoyas down by a goal going into the break.
The Blue & Gray had its chances in the second half, but a Pioneer goal in the 69th minute made a comeback difficult as the Hoyas eventually fell, 3-1.
The Georgetown offense was outshot, 16-6, and took just three corner kicks to Denver's five. Senior goalkeeper Matthew Brutto (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) posted four saves in goal.
Georgetown will travel to Princeton University on Friday to take on the Tigers at 7:30 p.m. The game will be televised locally on Verizon FiOS.
