Princeton, N.J. - The Georgetown University men's soccer team tied the Princeton University Tigers (1-2-1), 1-1, Friday evening in New Jersey. The Hoyas outshot the Tigers 21-14 and had eight more corner kicks but couldn't find the winning goal to tie in 110 minutes of play. Georgetown is now 2-2-1 on the season.
"As a group, we're disappointed that we didn't get a win out of the game because we felt we played well enough to do that," said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. "We played a great first half. We kept the ball and created chances but somehow we were down at half. We handled the adversity well and Seth found a way to get the goal back."
The Tigers came out on the attack to start the game and it took everything the Georgetown defense had to hold on. With the ball bouncing around in the box, senior goalkeeper Matthew Brutto (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) was forced to come off his line a number of times as his teammates covered the net.
In the 27th minute, the defense just couldn't hold on as Matt Sanner shot a flat ball from the right corner. A Hoya defender was there to knock it away but missed the ball allowing Lester Nare to poke it into the high left corner making it 1-0.
The Georgetown offense had its chances forcing the Princeton keeper to make four saves in the first half, but just couldn't find the back of the net. The Hoyas did hold an advantage in corner kicks taking six, while the Tigers were awarded none.
Despite a scare from the Tigers as a shot hit the post early in the second half, Georgetown bounced back scoring the equalizer in the 35th minute. Senior forward Chandler Diggs (Coppell, Texas/Coppell) was battling for the ball and won it passing to classmate Seth C'deBaca (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia Prep) who fired from the middle of the box on the right side. It soared into the left corner as Georgetown tied it at one.
The goal turned the tide as it was Georgetown that began to have more chances. Diggs hit a good shot towards the left side and sophomore Andy Riemer (McLean, Va./Georgetown Prep) had a breakaway in the 74th minute that forced keeper Sean Lynch to come up with a big save.
The Blue & Gray had two scares late, one going wide and the other never developing after a player slipped. A solid run by Jose Colchao (Fairfax, Va./Lake Braddock Secondary School) closed out regulation sending it into overtime.
The first overtime period ended without a significant look. In the second, Georgetown had a few nice combinations but couldn't come away with the goal to end the game in a 1-1 stalemate.
"In overtime I think it was just tired legs," said Wiese. "Diggs had a shot and we just didn't connect but we stayed disciplined and didn't give anything up. We felt like we had another goal in us."
The Hoyas outshot the Tigers 21-14 and took nine corner kicks to Princeton's one. Brutto was active in goal despite tallying just one save, Lynch saved seven Georgetown shots in the net.
Friday marked the second overtime game of the season for the Hoyas who defeated Northeastern in double overtime in the season opener.
"I'm proud that as a road team we were looking for a result and we're not happy with a tie. We pushed for a good result and had a good performance."
Georgetown will continue its battle of Ivy League opponents hosting the University of Pennsylvania on Sunday at North Kehoe Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
