Cincinnati, Ohio - The Georgetown University men's soccer team fell, 2-0, in its BIG EAST opener to the University of Cincinnati Bearcats (3-2-2, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) Saturday evening at Gettler Stadium. The Bearcats scored a pair of second-half goals to drop the Hoyas to 2-4-1 on the season and 0-1 in BIG EAST play.
We're disappointed with the loss," said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. "We were hoping to start the week off on a positive note, but the result aside, I thought we did some things well today. We have a lot to build upon to get ready for Adelphi on Wednesday. I'm disappointed for the boys because they played hard and they played well and deserved a result, either a tie or win on the road."
Cincinnati controlled the pace in the first half with five shots including two on goal. The Hoyas were disorganized early, but settled down after the first ten minutes and began to create chances.
"We had a number of chances on free kicks and corner kicks," said Wiese. "I thought Jimmy (Nealis) and Ian (Christianson) were great on setpieces. We looked dangerous."
Despite a lack of shots, the Blue & Gray did attempt three corner kicks in the half. Things got physical nearing the midway point of the game as the Bearcats were handed three yellow cards right before half. Georgetown went into the break holding Cincinnati scoreless.
The first score of the game came in the 56th minute when Nick Weightman tapped in a cross from Mark Konitsch.
"It was a long counter-attack and Matty (Brutto) still almost kept it out of the net, he did what he had to do to try and save it," said Wiese.
Going to three in the backline, the Bearcats managed one more score late in the game.
The Blue & Gray attempted to come back with a number of shots that were inches from the net. Sophomore Ian Christianson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Christian Life) had a good look at the goal in the 80th minute, but keeper Matt Williams made the save. Freshman Steve Neumann (New Hope, Pa./Council Rock North) had a header with 15 minutes remaining off of a nice cross from Chandler Diggs (Coppell, Texas/Coppell) that went just wide.
Georgetown was unable to mount a comeback in the final minutes as the Hoyas eventually fell, 2-0.
The Hoyas were outshot, 11-8, but took three more corner kicks to hold a 6-3advantage. Keeper Matthew Brutto (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) had five saves in the net for the Blue & Gray along with the back four doing a solid job keeping the Bearcats at bay. Williams had three saves for the game.
"It's a frustrating loss, but as a coach I can by happy with their effort," said Wiese. "Now we need to get back in the winning habit."
The Hoyas will host Adelphi University on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. on Multi-Sport Field. Live stats and Hoyavision will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
